I'll reiterate... The music is either for me doing solo's and having something on in the background, or with company and consent.

A few albums I'd suggest:

Sigh no more - Mumford and sons (folk / acoustic type stuff)
Takk - Sigur Ros (mostly instrumental post rock / acoustic / folk)

Anything by Explosions in the Sky (instrumental post rock guitar based brilliance). In fact I can't express enough how much this stuff just works in the background.

For a specific song, I cannot really fault Zorbing by Stornoway. A mesmerising intro that never fails to remind me of being outside on a glorious autumnal day.

Well I don't really have much music really, only a 4gig MP3 player. I have mostly punk from many era's plus some indie and alternative. Also have some Rap and hip hop. Also some blues. Got the Pogues too. Also the late great Johnny Cash's American recordings volume V. Its where he has teamed up with that famous white, bearded Rap/Hip Hop producer who contacted him late in his life after he kind of faded into a bit of obscurity. That producer just reckoned he could do something with the old fella and sure did. They covered all sorts of tracks over a long series of albums. The most successful one was I believe a Red Hot Chillis track about dying due to drugs. It was recorded close to his death and he knew he was close tot he end. Shortly after his wife died of course. The video is worth watching while listening to the words. Kind of changed the original meaning somewhat but it works so very well. Very emotive I think.

Anyway, I have no qualms about recommending Johnny Cash. I know its country but he was never really C&W IMHO but more a Rock type with an attitude that IMHO was later taken further with the punk attitude in some ways. What I mean is he hated authority and if you listen to the Jail song on one of his best of albums he told it how he thought or felt it. BTW it was a live recording in one of the most notorious and famous prisons in USA where he was right in among the prisoners with a few guards and VIPs too. Nothing stopping the crowded prisoners from getting to him and the other guests. He got them on side with that song as he put the prison name in there. Also as you're chilling before turning in. It is often good to have a funny song and Cash does those emotive ballads then some humourous ones too. Man called Sue makes me smile to myself as I'm drifting off.

The above is when on my own. I do think music is personal to people as we all have our own tastes. Inflicting your music on others is not good unless they appreciate your tastes. However if they do have your tastes then sharing music is a good way to pass some time and break some ice. You might have some bands or artists they haven't heard but like and vice versa. Of course that doesn't mean you can share that new music without the artists' permission of course!! ;)

My phone is mainly metal /rock, Maiden to Slayer. But my chill out tunes which are great on family camps in the evening with the last brew before turning in include.
The Eagles.
Bon Jovi - The left feels right. All there hits played acoustic.
Ghost Dancers - sioux indian music

Having listened to some of the suggestions....if anyone started playing most of that stuff near my pitch I would soon be throwing rocks at them!
Rik has the best suggestions oon there as far as I can see - but as I prefer live music I can see difficulties in my getting a quartet to come out hammocking with me!

Before you blank off the concept of music when camping look at what that bit of green space gives you, piece and some quiet, solitude or the companionship of friends, space and freedom, there is no better environment to enjoy music so long as you don't impose on others.

Most of you will have heard this on some advert on telly, but good as it is she did so much more as well
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SE1VrzT6RrQ&feature=related, imagine, you've just put up you shelter of choice, got a drink of choice in hand, lean back and listen, let your feet tap to the beat, let the rest of the world go by :) The birds will make noise all night so have a little 'me' time.

You just pretty much summed up why I want to take some mellow music with me Rik.

It can really enhance your mood sometimes. Bit of classical, chill out or folk.
All by myself, middle of nowhere, gently in the background!

Any chance we can keep the thread on music suggestions for 'Campfire Music' as I'm sure I named it

Rather than 'I hate it when people play Music around Campfires' If I wanted to know views on the subject, I'd ask.

With no offence intended.

Cheers.
