7. items bought or traded at the meet dont count as you have to test your new bit of kit out :)

I think that sales/trade items need to be looked at if a fair usage manner ~ if you end up with an extra knife, so what? But if you process loads of wood with a newly bought saw (or axe) then, unless one was on your list, you might seem to be cheating :nono: .

thank you Phil for pointing out that i put the FAK was back on the list

No worries

i will be more than happy to share someonen else's firebox for warmth at night :) :campfire:

Isn't making a major use of someone elses kit a bit of a cheat?
It's not so bad if you've been using a firebox as it could just as easily be your fire others are sitting around and you'll have had to make the effort to collect and process your own supply of fuel ~ and although the firebox wouldn't be counted in your items, any tools used to process the fuel would be.

... with regards to fire box im tempted to take mine as its got a built in grate ...

If the grate is built in and cannot be removed* I'd say call it quits on it being regarded as an item and put a call of trust for fair play on it. By that I mean that you could use the grill where you would have gone straight onto the embers or flame with either food or container. This retains the ability to grill things like root veg, but removes the ability to cook meats.

* Or, if removed, the firebox would or could be easily damaged when used without it ~ some firebox designs make use of the grill to prevent/lessen heat distortion/warping.

... i have a axe i have ordered that i will want to test if it arrives intime.

On this I would say that it's an issue of what you use it for. One way round it counting as an item is to process some wood for someone else's fire rather than your own. Where it's put to use for tasks which you could use a 'bushy' knife it's a non-issue (that is, providing you have a 'bushy' knife on your list :naughty: :lmao: ).

Could someone explain fireboxes to me please?

Wood fires need to be raised and contained. This is for two reasons, the first is to keep the number of fire scars (and the detritus in them) at a minimum and the second is because the pitch is on leaf mulch.
Although fires on leaf mulch are more of an issue in long dry periods (like May to Aug last year) it's just easier to have people plan their fires around the need to have it off the floor all the time.

Of course, it also means that the curse of Twang Twang (aka Andy2112) means that your fire is also less likely to be washed away :yikes: :yikes: ~ look for the December '08 Meet for pics :yikes: :yikes:

... right for thouse that want to take part in the 15 item kit challange

I'm not sure how to tell you ...

I've been helping to plan a scout group's Easter camp ...

Their kit list is for 6 items :yikes: .

But they will be scavenging/foraging and doing challenges to earn extra items ~ the extra items include their food :lmao: and something to eat it off :yikes: :lmao: :yikes:.

Well Phil my fire box is mad of a old metal military first aid box it has a hinged lid, witch i have cut out a grill and boil plate for pots, so would it be fair to use the grill to boil the water as im not going to use the grill to cook meat only to prevent my cup getting covered in soot.

IIRC, the grill is built into the box and is part and parcel of the design? As you could put the cup into the embers, I'd say that it's a fair use of the grill ~ if it was a metal mug with a plastic handle, it would be a different thing :campfire: .

... dose their 6 items include their cabin bed sheets matress pillows and quilt ? as my 15 dose :)

Yep :p . As with your list, theirs doesn't include their spare set of clothes or their food / drinks / water bottle.

EDIT: The six items include the cardboard box that they'll each sleep in and a part share in the tarps over the communal/sleeping area ~ so, in reality, they get four items :yikes: .

They questioned how much 'material stuff' was actually needed and asked to do a bare minimum camp ~ and wanted it based on disaster relief. There will be extras for them to find ~ but there's no guarantee that there'll be a plate and/or mug each. :headbang:

A correction to the above ...

They have to find the tarps and boxes ~ so they get just four items :p .

I missed a bit and edited it in ~ they're outside. Their shelters will be cardboard boxes ~ which will be somewhere on site for them to find.

Not a problem ~ because you could, you don't need to ;) . If you didn't need to use the firebox you would put the mug at the edge of the fire/bed of embers ~ you gain no real advantage by using the grill and therefore you're not cheating :D .
