Whittling for Newbies (with small hands)

I'd love to start whittling while I'm out and about, but what would be a good knife for me to start with?

This is bearing in mind that I'm on a budget and have small, female hands (size 7).

I've got a Mora Clipper for regular use but figured the blade would probably be a bit big for me to control?

Also for sharpening - do wet/dry paper combos and a leather belt work well enough?

Mora 120 or 106 carving knife

i agree with duncan, mora 120 is a great knife. SWMBO finds the mora clipper a bit too big for her hands but likes the mora 120, so if you're ok with your clipper then the 120 should bve fine for you.

as for sharpening, you really can't go far wrong with wet'n'dry and a leather strop, it's pretty much all i use for any of my knifes.

The Mora 106 and the 120 can be bought at a fair price from lakeland bushcraft on here, but don't take my word for it, shop around first!

They are excellent knives but the sheaths are rubbish and tend to come loose, so be careful

Robin Wood issues them to his students for his spoon carving workshops, like the one we did here: ( I'm the one who grins and giggles a lot)

Bah Buxxer! never mind watch in youtube! Lizzie the lass nearest the camera near the start, is using the 106, as is everyone else but you can see Lizzie the clearest.

oh and the last shot, is the stuff I made, with the 106 and a variety of crook knives that weekend!

The Clipper's great for general purpose stuff, but think I'd find it a bit cumbersome for any fine detail so have just ordered a 106 to see how I get on with it - now just need to sort out a different sheath

I'm nearly sure I've got at least one leather one, I made but no one wanted to buy,I'll check and if I can find it, you can have it for nothing.

I'll sort out a bit of leather, for a strop too

Right I've found the sheath I was on about, if you want it, it's yours just pm an address to send it to.

I've also dug out a couple of knitted kevlar gloves; one small(ish) one large, they aren't "handed" so both of you can have one.
These will stop you slashing yourself but the point of the blade will still go through the glove, so please be careful!

There's also a small piece of leather for a strop too.
