My sis and her fella are off to Thailand etc early next year, so i'm looking for practical idea's for gifts for them, they're backpacking most of it (they've been before) but i'm stumped for ideas.

so far i've got them a decent travel first aid kit and a couple of buff's. they've got packs and cooking items etc but what else could i possibly get them? what would be useful to someone visiting thailand, the Philippines and oz etc?

doesn't help that her birthday is the 3rd of jan, double whammy for christmas time gifts heh.

A water purification system - about the only thing I needed in Thailand ...and that was in the hostels realy...I went cheap!
I never needed to cook in Thailand - the street food was good and cheaper than DIY!
Penknives perhaps with a sharpener, anti-fungal footpowder, good guidebooks, Tilly hats, leech socks (I hate leeches!), waterproof rucksack liners, waterproof 1 use cameras (trashed my camera in a downpour in the jungle trying to get "atmospheric" shots), one of those books that have pictures of everything you might want in it - universal translator kind of thing - very useful if you dont have the lingo and in the wilds where English is not spoken, waterproof map case, mini drybags for phones etc...
That is all I can think of at the moment....

like john says go light as everything is so cheap out there. my friends go in the clothes they stand up in and a pair of shorts and they go for 7 weeks at a time.and flip flops must nt forget them.how about john's famous book just in case!!!

The one thing I wished I had taken with me was more stomach tablets i.e. renee, gaviscon type tablets.

I loved the food but the food did not always love me....

It IS where I got the ideas for the coconut cup, ladel and bottle!

Lol titanium sporks eh? sounds like a plan.

i like the idea of a water purification system of some kind, i'm thinking the drinksafe as its quite compact and will just web onto their packs. drybags also a good idea methinks.
the issue is they have alot of kit already but are missing some nigly important bits (like titanium sporks)
:D

Hi ,
A couple of those silk sleeping bag/bed liners , they pack small , really lightweight . And they mean that you only have to wash the liner and not the sleeping bag ( for sweat/dirt stink ) and they don't have to worry about dodgy sheets in hostels etc .
Cheers , Trev .
