Interesting Measure the distance from the Earth to the Sun six months apart and trig it from there

Anyway, it gave me thought.
There's the ubiquitous dod, as in , "Gimme a dod of that." that is always just the right size. There is the, "In a minute!", which is always understood to be anything but. The, "I'll see you later (accent dependant on the intention of why ) that is an accepted unspecified but happily accepted time.

Also applies to any very small measurement.

"About a mile" - 2 or 3 miles.

Time is measured until sunset, especially in winter. Also in the form of 'hours of daylight'. On pub walks, as 'hours until opening/closing time'

The walking pole is a decent unit of length, as is a bivvy bag, or a 3x3m tarp.

Weight is measured in rucksacks and daybags, or in volumes of water.

Bushcrafters also have a unique way of measuring time, which is "boil time for a pint of water"

Temperatures are measured in their effects on things, as in sizzles, boils, sears, chills or freezes.

Injuries are measured in stiches

Does anyone have a good measure of 'midginess'?

Hmmmmm....wonder if this could be used...however will vary on your tolerance to the midge of course.


No midges - walking around the highlands in shorts and t-shirt enjoying your day
Light midginess - slightly irritation by the midges but nothing to worry about and you carry on your walk
Medium midginess - more iritated by the midge and start hitting them as they land
Heavy midginess - midge net, gloves and skin so soft come out and you just want to get inside a shelter out of their way
West Coast of Scotland midginess - running away from a black cloud of midges that blocks out the sun.

Oh yes, temperatures can also be measured in numbers of clothing layers.

I do that starting from the base layer and adding.

Base = Warm

Base +1 = Normal

Base +2 = Chilly

Base +3 = Cold

Base +4 = Sub Zero

Base +5 = Brass Monkeys

Also in Dog's ie A two dog night (you allow both your dogs in your sleeping bag to keep you warm)

# Brews time = I will be there in four brews time, could be used to mesure distance and time, in the time it would take me to walk 20 mile i would have stopped for a brew 4 times, i normally have a brew every hour, so walking at around 5 miles an hour on flat easy going ground, reduce distance or increase brews for hills or rough going, so the time bit would be 5 mph + brew time of say 20 mins = 5 hours 20 for an easy flat 20 mile walk or a four brew walk,
