Hi all.

I'm looking to get knives for my three kids. They are aged 11, 10(girls) & 8(boy)

They have already got Opinel safety folders which they love using when in the garden or on holiday but to watch them using them, I know it is only a matter of time before the blade is left unlocked open and they fold it onto their knuckles/fingers.

I have decided that a 2" to 3" fixed blade neck knife is the way forward and would like some recommendations from you knowledgeable Peeps.

Trouble is they will want something different to each other.

I have found this at Heinnie: http://www.heinnie.com/Knives/Linder...p-92-164-3947/
Are Linder any good?

Also showed the girls these:

http://www.greenmanbushcraft.co.uk/c...cout-knife.htm

I got laughed at! Little :censored:

Found these today and yet to seek wife's & kids opinion

Any opinions and advice welcome

Cheers.
Steve.

My son got a basic Helle knife (Folkkniven) with attractive wood handle and leather sheath when he was 11. It was/is razor sharp which meant that he was ultra-careful with it. Now he's 13 he is confident using it. He has treasured it and keeps it in its tube box on a high shelf so his numptie friends can't fiddle with it. He understands he can only wear it and use it when I am around and we are on a trip etc

the green man bushcraft links dont work

depends on what they like, traditional or modern.

I got my friend a mora (a stainless one this time) and shes very pleased with it. (not sure of the number, its the wee one with a purple end to the handle)

Shes already cut herself three times.

Same steel as a Mora those apparently... Some times its the body mechanics kids cant get to grips with when carving, kids tend to use the end of the blade for some natural reason, even after telling them that the stronger cut comes from closer to the handle they still drift ip to the tip, so a shorter blade can give them greater mechanical advantage when carving there for greater control over their cutting.

I would disagree wiht mora, whilst they are cheap, they break easily. Dpends on your budget really. some of the gerbers are very good for their money. The metoilis and the big rock are so far the most indestructable knives i have owned for less than £40

Well ours has been used by various scouts and battoned through as thick as half the blade length and if our Scouts havent damged it I think its good enough.

Have you seen the strength of teh average 8 to 12 year old these days

I have battoned my mora through a hornbeam log, and carved a spork with the same said wood, and mora wasn't damaged. I have seen a vidoe where one was shoved into a log and stood on. Saying that i think they can be a little large in the hand for some children the opiniel and brusletto are good as well.

The best colour for childs knife is bright orange.

For children?

dont see the problem? because it looks a little tactical doesnt mean it is going to sneak around stabbing people or be a bad influence on children.... the whole point is they like the knife they have, my dads first knife was a dagger (taylor eye witness sheffield) and he never used it for what it was intended for, and those gerbers arent even designed as fighting knives!
and since when have moras been easily breakable?

i vote that you show them various moras, there are a good few designs in a range of colours and are mostly cheap and effective.
