i've got a couple of peddles I want to drill holes in to, to make pendants.

I would be inclined to set the stone i nto a bed of plasticene or something similar at least to start the hole. Or hot melt glue it to a tempory wooden support? If its a small thin stone it will smash easy if it moves while your trying to drill. Have you thought of using a dremel?
If you can drill half way through then flip the stone over and drill from the other side so the holes meet in the middle.
This will avoid the risk of 'blowing' the stone when the bit penetrates through the stone.

Going to use the dremmel but hold the stone in a press drill vice, so it should stay put.

Aye...what Wanderin' says.....I've done a few 'pebble' danglys.....an' the best way is t' drill...turn o'er an' drill...else the bit tatters the back as ye goes thro.
I've drilled stones before with nothing more than a standard masonary bit.
I don't use hammer action and ensure the drill is nice and slow and gently apply the pressure so you drill smooth and slow. keeping the drill cool helps , you can just drip water on it.
BOSH (I think) do some great drills that cut all sorts and have a pointed end - i'll try to find a link.... i like them a lot, well worth the extra!

not had a chance to buy some drill bits yet.
