Hi all,
Was reading one of Rays books and saw how he had a saw blade rolled up in a billy can, that he makes into a bow saw when at camp, I'd really like to have a go at this, so does anyone know which type of saw blade I can use?
Cheers
Will

Sounds like tool abuse to me, any curve left in the blade is going to make sawing difficult.

No it's a really long flexible bow saw blade and when tightened in your saw it wont have any bends in:)

I did a green woodworking course last year. One of the tools there was a bow saw using a section of bandsaw blade. It worked fairly well for cutting curves in plank, but it was slow going. I would guess the blades from my bandsaw would roll up to that sort of diameter.

In one of the scrap bins at work I spotted a blade from a metal cutting bandsaw. It would probably need a bit of sharpening but the teeth are pretty aggressive. I'll have a look at how flexible it is tomorrow (I knew it would be worth salvaging).

I reckon it's worth a play. Probably best to avoid leaving the blade rolled up in storage, just for transport.

Have fun.

If properly heat-treated (hardened and tempered) a spring (e.g. a saw blade) shouldn't take a 'set'. If you bend it beyond its elastic limit it'll take a set though.

Is there anything wrong with storing a bow saw blade with its guard down the length of your pack? Spring steel in a tin sounds like a trip to A&E waiting to happen.

Of course, it could have been one of those handy chain saw things instead.

i think thats what i would do too, also i dont have any round pans, my swedish army trangia is oval:D lol

but i wouldnt get a hand chainsaw as an alternative, i have the one in the link and its prety useless. imo you cant get a faster cutting saw than a bowsaw, i have a £45 worth of pruning saw and that wont beat one!

I once watched a semi retired joiner at work setting and sharpening a decent quality disston saw. He said here I'll show you something useful. He looked along the row of teeth and there was a kink, very slight, but enought to show up. Then to my surprise and horror he held the handle in one hand, and the toe end of the blade in the other hand, then quite abruptly bent the entire blade into a horse shoe shape with the 2 ends almost touching; then bent it the other way, back and forth about 4 or 5 times each way. Then he said now take a look....and the kink was no where to be seen, he said this only works with a good quality blade.....:)
I have used bandsaw blades to make a few various saws, the narrow skip tooth ones work best. An unspringing sandvik blade is lethal, been there done that. I think I'd sandwich the blade between the wood parts of a collapsible bow saw.
