Any one got a suggstion as how to clean pine resin up - I'm wanting to get rid of a the bits of bark, dirt and Pluerococcus etc.

uppy_dog I'll give it a try - but how much resin do you loose by setting fire to it
the product is pine tar, not clean resin. useful for sticking and proofing, but not for augmenting tinder supplies or anything.
the only thing i can think of is melting it and allowing it to run through some small holes- similar to the above link, but with less heat.

I watched a vid of a buy making a birch canoe the other day and he melted it poured it into a cloth and used a stick to twist the cloth and force the resin through , if thats what he does in the link sorry i havnt looked at it yet 
If you want really, really clean stuff, dissolve it in turpentine, strain through a fine strainer and then slowly let it dry off under a lamp or on top of a radiator.
HWMBLT did some for me that looks like amber beads it's so clean
He rolled it into balls that look awfully like candy balls
The smell in the house while it's being made is wonderful.

Just a side point: Could some knowledgeable person tell me how do I get the stuff of my hands and, clean my knife? It's so dam sticky, and in the field hot water etc is not always immediately to hand?
Fine back at base, but do you carry that in your kit all the time?
I suppose could be in a tiny tub with a little cloth or something. Would Meths from my stove work maybe? Stinks on the hands though.

I cleaned some up whilst out a few weeks back. I just cut the lid off a beer can placed it close to the fire and added the resin. As the resin melted i just filtered it through a bit of hessian cloth. Keep repeating this as the resin melts.
It sets like glass and can then be stored and used.
Also once you have finished with the hessian and left over bits of gunk, pour the remains onto the hessian cloth and wire wrap it to a stick
The all you need to do is set it alight, grab your pitch fork and yer away

run my petrol stoves on panel wipe, plus i tend to colelct stuff from where I live
