Life changing decision (sort of).

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I live with out a car but in a capital city and a 5min walk from the metro line. The worst thing is going to the supermarket. You are so limited in what you can carry that you end up going shopping 4 times a week!

Get a shopping trolley Sam. I can do a two week shop in one go with a shopping trolley and three large canvas bags. I walk there, and get the bus back home.

I've been having a sniff around at hire cars and have found a small economy car for hire at £11 per day, unlimited mileage. So I could have it for three days for just over £40 + petrol.

That seems a really good deal. Now I just have to visit the place on Monday and see what the deal is. If they insist on a credit card, I'm stuffed - I only really do cash or Paypal these days. We'll have to wait and see what they say.

Either way, I've promised young Cameron that we're going up to the Crannog next weekend so come hell or high water, I'll find a way.

Have you thought of joining a 'car club'

http://www.optionc.co.uk/index.php

Been having a long talk with the missus about getting a new car. I wanted one, she says we can't afford to run one. I pointed out that I need one to get to events and stuff, she pointed out that neither of us are working, I'll have my bus pass in a couple of years time (she already has hers) so a car would be a luxury item.

So, we've decided we don't need a car. The compromise is, that for events where I can sell my stuff, I can hire a van and I can hire a van for a couple of meets each year as well. For local travel I can use my mountain bike or use the bus. I can live with that I think.

The money we have managed to save would have bought a cheap car, but once the tax, insurance and fuel are added, we'd be strapped just keeping it on the road and to be honest it'd sit outside the house six days a week. So the money is going on a new cooker, some wallpaper and paint and enough kept back for van hire for the Crannog this month and Lanark next month. If I flog enough stuff the van hire costs will be ploughed back into the pot. Sounds doable but we'll have to see how it works in reality.

Interestin' times me thinks.

Now all I have to do is find a cheap van hire place in Durham.

Well I have gone for this option - http://www.bikecare.co.uk/cargotrail.html - I've bought an Avenir Mule cargo trailer for my bike. I've got fed up with the whole car thing, it doesn't look like the DVLA want to re-issue me with my licence even though I've been discharged from the neurologist for 18 months so I'm going to have to go green and pedal myself everywhere :) At last I'll be able to shop where I want, not where will deliver!
