First opportunity to get up to the tipi this year, and despite looking a little worse for wear, still standing and snug once the fire was lit..

The scouts used tarps and kept fires going throughout the night, and despite the cold and wet coped well..

They even managed to stay dry in the canoe...

But then it was too much to resist...Kids and water, what can you say...

Its good to be back doing it again. Its been a long winter...

Was wondering where you had got to! Nice to see you back again.

Thanks Spamel. Not that I've been idle all winter, you understand....
Managed to tap a fair bit of birch sap for the scouts to drink, with comments varying from "tastes like water" to "Sweet and woody", which I thought quite accurate.

More to come over the coming months.

Silkstone, Blighty!
In fact, was it you that decided to try your hand at beekeeping last year? I have a hankering to try it, but could do with pointers so i may start a thread on it. I'll need to do research on it though, but what is there that can really go wrong?!

Now that would be a great idea, I've been wanting to have a go at that for ages, I quite fancy the idea of honey off the comb...:p

pics look great, used to love my old Sls tipi, always a great meeting point

did u need a greenfield camping permit to run a camp like this, also any extra infor on how you ran this camp would be much appreciated as trying to teach yourself how to be a good leader isnt very easy

That looks like a great camp the kids must love it I know my Scouts would. I could do with a camp like that myself I will have to get a pass from SWMBO soon.

The green field part would be whether there was toilets and a water supply on site.

Teaching yourslef to be a good leader is different and should supported by your group an district.
Have a look here for some more help though. what section do you take.

Hi Stovie....Nice to see your still out there doing stuff. Great shot of the kids in the water, is that a dam they are building...? I used to love building dams and then breaking it up with that big whoosh of water....

Spamel I do beekeeping with my close mate (Wellsy), he who helps with most of my hairbrained ideas such as the tipi and the cider press (actually that was his idea)....He is the "expert" when it comes to bees, I just follow his lead. I've got a thread on here somewhere about honey collection. we had a good crop this year, somewhere in the region of 700lb from 10 colonies.

it's been a hard winter as we have lost 3 colonies (first time in years) 2 to Veroa and one appears to have starved, despite feeding. probably queenless and weak.

As I say I'm no expert, but will venture to offer any advice that I can and if not get the beekeeping guru to help out.

Water supply....Toilets.....

Now that would be too easy.....

They have a spade....and they have Millbags and fires to boil water....(Oh! okay, I'm not that hard, there is a tap about half a mile away if they dont fancy the look of the stream...)

That canoe is awesome, very well done. That is now on my "Must Do" list. Looks like a great time with the kids. Mac

Mac, there is a thread on how the canoe was made, somewhere on here. Basically its bamboo canes and an old canvas tent thats been painted....

I agree with your first comment, Pang, but have to disagree with the latter. The numbers in my village group have reached an all time high, not only through the group, but within the scout section itself. The secret....Give them something they dont get every day....mud, fun, freedom and absence from technology.....

Hey! JP...hows life in the sunny south west???

Yep, thats a dam, and just out of picture to the left is a waterfall, and when they were thouroughly mud-caked they stood underneath to clean off....they're totally mad...just like their leader....

Good to hear from you Jon....

our district has just made record numbers as well, plus due to restructuring in scotland we shall gain another 10/12 groups, so all is good here anyway.

Try this link Webbie. And in amongst it might be some other links. Any questions, just ask. It was a simple construction...almost elongated coracle, if you like.

Okay cant post link cos all I keep getting is the forum link....

Anyway go to my profile and threads started and look for canoe thread. Sorry cant be more helpful at the moment...
