I got to find the equivalent of this baby on my side of the pond.

There is a cheap one at Wallmart, but I have this thing where I cannot stand buying at their stores so I'm looking for an alternative. What a dilemma....

I took the solar radio a while back. I was surprised that it actually works! Its now my "gardening radio"

Hope it works out for you Wintrup!

i think the radio was a real bonus. It works great. No batteries needed. It's just a pity that it doesn't have AM only FM.

I tried my dehydrator out by drying some strawberries yesterday. They promptly went into my muesli mix. The only thing was that some of the bits were still holding moisture and so i ate them. But then I thought, dried apricots are usually still full of moisture but they don't seem to go mouldy. Is it preservatives?

Good question ! My theory is that the moisture in the apricots is not in contact with the air.

If I recall correctly, in the last couple week I've seen in the news that people found a 2000 years old melon in Japan.

Scientists believe the fruit piece might have got trapped in a vacuum pocket just underneath the ground layer, preventing it from decomposition.

Just a tought...

I think its possible - apple rings are fairly soft too. I'm experimentig with vacuum packing dried fruit too. Fairly pointless since I scoff it so quick!

NB for those who have pm'd this is not the dehydrator I have but seems to be the smae specification but a different make. I have dealt with the firm before though without problem

I think I'll try and keep some fruit and veg samples for a year to see how they perish. And maybe experiment with saving some that seem to still have moisture.

Great! :D - thanks for the heads up mate! - I've been keeping my eyes out for a cheap one

- it will go well with our newly aquired jucier!:lmao: ....... 'so do you fancy your tea wet or dry tonight!?

Glad it was useful Graham. As I said, I haven't used this model but it seems the same as mine. Basic but functional :)

Minced beef is good dried too. Fry the mince, rinse under boiling water to remove fat, then dry. These keep very well (I've used some that was 4 or 5 months old) and are a good base for a curry or spag bol
