This may not work. Here we go. You have the opportunity to ask any bushcraft question that you like, perhaps you've been to embarrassed to ask for you haven't felt it would sustain a thread on it's own.

The thing is before you get to ask a question you have to answer the question that precedes yours! :D Is this making sense! ;)

Anyway it's only meant as a bit of fun but it might bring up something useful particularly for any newbies.

So here's my question to start it off. Which would do you find best in the UK to start a bowdrill fire?

:)

Willow,

My question is:- name 3 natural alternatives to feather to make arrow fletchings. I am trying to make some darts for atlatl, but can't lay my hand on some good feathers.

Answer Post 1 - Ivy, though can difficult to find nice straight stems of good length (and hordes of people hating you for knowing many sites which pole straight lengths thick enough for hearth boards :) )

Answer Post 2 - birch bark, sweet chestnut leaves, wood (only two fletchings though)

Cool stuff fallow.

But you didn't ask a question! You need to answer and then ask a question!

Hope you don't mind but I'll ask one in stead. Erm, when is the best time to 'milk' a birch tree?

I sharpen a similar sized blade on my normal bench stones, works just fine don't think you'd have any problems sharpening an SAK this way. Except the steels bloody hard tho.

Similar question, Finally got myself a Gransfors SFA. Should I buy a GB axe stone/file or will my bench stones be ok? Anything to watch out for when sharpening an axe. (sorry i know thats 2 questions) :) .

I use a Jap Water stone(and also carry a DC4 for touch ups in the field....well...wood) the only major thing is to keep the convex bevel the same and this is done with a loose circular motion rocking over the bevel to include the ege rather than a flat bevel backwards and forwards as with some knives which is something you do not want on the axe. As the axe enters wood, this "cheek" (yes I know another part of the axe is the cheek, but for the purposes of explanation....) on either side touches to wood and minimalises the surface area biting into the wood, reducing the chances of getting the axe stuck. As always, it is easier to do and show rather than describe, and my digi cam is broken.

Ok so no question again. So here's another, but please remember the point is that WHEN YOU ANSWER A QUESTION YOU ASK ONE FOR THE NEXT LINK!

What knots do you use to tie your hammock?

I'd have said Golden Eagle....But then having said that there is a bl@*#y big ostrich in longleat.....

Best wood for drill and hearth?...thought we'd had that one...Willow or Ivy...

How do you keep 40+ scouts interest high over a one day period on the 17th Feb...I have food prep (skinning etc) shelter building, firelighting, first aid (giving them two poles, and they have to make a stretcher and carry one of their team across a ditch)...they will have hiked 3 miles to get there and will have shot air rifles before hand....Any other ideas that are short and sweet...(teams of 6)

I would've thought it was the golden eagle, don't they have a 2metre wingspan?

I've always found that you get good results if you use the same would for the hearth as you do for the drill. Sycamore always works. But as long as the drill is harder than the hearth, it is fine. I've used a holly drill with a cedar pine hearth to good effect! Pine on pine works just as well.

(this is quite a philosophical question)

Why, out of all the possible hobbies in the world, did Bushcraft capture your imagination and attention the most?
