If you are looking for a mainly indoor or dry weather blanket, I would suggest the following: -

Silentnight Heat Genie

Thin layer of fleece on top, sherpa fleece underneath with a foil reflective blanket sandwiched in the middle.

It does puzzle me that if Silentnight offer this sort of option, why outdoor companies do not offer similar.

My Snugpac (20 year old) sleeping bag also has similar set up (reflectatherm)

Basically, because we have down, which traps tremendous amounts of air for it's weight compared to fleece. The foil sounds good but in reality it acts as a vapour barrier, which is great when you want to reduce evaporative heat loss in a wet and cold casualty, but not great when it's trapping moisture inside your sleeping bag.

That looks like a nice blanket to throw over the duvet for extra insulation during the winter and a bargain at £40. It's tempting to get one of those as well.

Even though I mostly intend to use it indoors at home I'm still attracted by the Buffalo blanket due to its fast drying properties and its ability to stay warm even when wet. If one of our horses or a friends horse ever becomes ill or escapes I might need to spend the night out in the middle of Dartmoor on a cold wet windy night at very short notice. So being able to grab a Buffalo blanket on the way out could be a really handy thing to have with us.

That one's not mine. It was just a generic picture of a horse rug that I found on an internet advert.

I haven't got any photos of my own photos to hand at the moment but after your comment I has a quick look on my girlfriends Facebook pictures and found this photo of one of our horses looking rather smart in his brand new rug. (It's a little short I know)



I also found this one which is much more realistic. This was a a brand new rug bought two days earlier. Come back the next day and it's covered in mud from rolling, ripped to shreds from playing with the other horses and the stuffing been stolen by magpies to insulate their nest. Typical!
