I’ve just been given a book called Einsteins Riddle. It’s full of classical puzzles and riddles.
It starts with pure slog puzzles (like Einstein’s) and meanders through logic philosophy and paradox puzzles. Most of them are well known.

I love the Bertrand Russel quotation:
It has been said that man is a rational animal. All my life I have searched for evidence that might support this

Keep learning new skills, keep practicing and applying. Gardening is becoming much more important as retirement beckons. Dancing and lessons beckon when I have the time. Vary your cooking repertoire.
Reinforcement by practice of important knowledge and skills is useful. Forge new neuronal links, to replace those that fail or are pruned from lack of use.
Monitor what you struggle with, and practice if it's important.
Things fail, and everything degrades, but you can prolong your capabilities. The better you are, the more you practice, the longer you have.

Stupid example: to stop my back from playing up, I've started doing sit ups again. 200 yesterday, a fraction of what I was once capable of, but more than most people will ever manage.

The more you start with, the more you use it, the longer you maintain the functional level you need.

The uncharitable amongst you may consider thats why we see so many footballers with Alzheimers. That was an attempt at humour, but retiring at 35 and not needing to develop new skills may come with consequences.

Maybe we should have a dedicated thread to puzzles , riddles , ding bat type things? Not sue how we would provide the answers ( Maybe white text on white background underneath? )

People could add a puzzle or riddle / dingbat whatever when they wish for all?

I think that the idea is a good one.
The problem these days is the internet.
It would be down to the individual as to how long they exercise their brain before hitting the web or the answer button.

Think of it in the same way as a farmyard honesty box.

Its only for self induced enjoyment.

Experiment to test the spoiler function as I’ve never used it before:

A train shuttles between London and Southampton.

The London to Southampton journey takes 80 minutes, however the return journey, Southampton to London, takes an hour and twenty minutes. Experts have examined every aspect of track and locomotives but can find no measurable difference between the two journeys.

How do you explain this?

Repeat - this isn’t brain training, it’s to test the system.

80minutes = 1 hour 20 minutes

AI reminded me of something important last night regarding sleep.

I wanted to talk about some exciting films before bed and it told me that I should steer clear of too much stimulation before sleep, not good for rest.

I said that it was correct but that we are culturally prone to late night overstimulation.

Strip an A10 motorcycle engine right down to split con rod, bolt by bolt.
I have rarely got past removing cables
Amals and rocker box.

Sing (in imagination) through my repertoire of sea shanties. Rarely get far. I either drop off to sleep or get a dig in the guts because I’m not imagining!!

Big thing for me is that I don’t worry that I’m not sleeping. I’m warm, comfortable and just trying to relax the thought process.

Recent worries about family have on occasion kept me awake and a strange thought slowed the brain. I told myself that, regardless of anything that might or might not happen, my current worry was just a load of chemicals dumped into my blood stream. That was a surprisingly relaxing thought.

Learning to read and write sheet music has been good brain training for me. I think it has a good balance between stress and finding a natural flow in translating information. It's also very rewarding. Hard to explain but it feels like good exercise. Perhaps similar to learning another language.

Also came across a good game called 'Hive' which has a bit of a chess like feel to it. Lots of thinking ahead. I find the stress of competing against other people can be quite good exercise for my brain.

Puzzle ( Not too difficult )

You have been given 9 Pearls and a pair of scales.

You are advised that one of the Pearls is a fake and is heavier than the other 8 ( real) Pearls.

If you can identify the one Fake pearl you are allowed to keep the real pearls.

You are however only allowed to use the scales a maximum of Two times.

( Just for fun, I'm sure many won't find this too difficult - no need to post your thinking just give me a Thumbs up when you know you have the answer )

I like hive. The variety to it is good. Do you just use the standard pieces or do you have any add ons?

I just use the standard pieces. As you say, it's got good variety and I don't feel like it really needs anything adding to it. I like it as is.
Do you use the additional pieces?
No but we have talked baout it.

It's not one we've played for a while but my son likes to use the beetle to drop on a gap at the end. The add on piece of the pillbug (woodlouse) could be good to counter that.
