I've just finished the four books in the Aristophania series of graphic novels.

I'm part of the way into Economix but not sure that I'll persevere; it seems to me that the author is not at all impartial and it is starting to read more like propaganda than like education.

I have The Anglo Saxons by Marc Morris waiting for me.

I'm re-reading Rewild your Mind as well, probably for the third time. I'm also re-reading Thoreau's Walden, which I keep returning to as it is such a good guide to simple and purposeful living.
SWMBO bought me a copy of Walden a little over fifteen years ago...

I had a hard time reading it.

He built his cabin with planks and nails taken from the liquidation sale of a bankrupt, lived by earning money from tutoring for kids of rich locals, played at self-reliance and wrote in a weird, fake, olde-worlde style like the worst of Lovecraft and Emerson.

I think that if he was alive today, he'd be living in a remote cottage out in the wilds of Wales, Scotland or the West Country, with a Range Rover Evoque hidden in the barn.

The original story line for the Halo games was written by Greg Bear who's written many good science fiction books. His two books Eon and Eternity are some of the finest works of science fiction in my opinion and I highly recommend them to any fans of the genre.

And he inflicts his ideas on others
Oh, dont forget I said that, but he is well worth reading regardless.

But no, a guy whose wilderness is a handy jaunt into town to do his washing. (Probably someone elses chore)

Anyhow, latest book;

Bog Fashion by Nicole DeRushie

All you needed to know about Bronze and Iron Age clothing

the Archaeology

And the practicality.

(Maybe a book also handy for those who want to make their own clothes and just about can thread a needle...)

RIP Greg.

The three precursor trilogy books he wrote are my absolute favorite. Mans a good world builder. I think Kelly Gay is following in his footsteps however.

Wild Swans - Three Daughters of China, by Jung Chang.

Almost a three-generational autobiography (two bios and an autobio) of a slightly privileged family in China, covering 1909 to 1978. The family histories are seen within the context of all the political upheaval going on in China at the time: the war between the Kuomintang and Communists, The Great Famine and The Cultural Revolution. An amazing amount of turmoil and displacement within the country during that time, and a lot for anyone to live through, and especially for someone to be born into.

A gripping read, I found...

Very beautiful story. From Feudal to Western via the Cultural Revolution in three generations.
I loved her father’s poetry too.

Political Girl - Life and Fate in Russia by Maria Alyokhina.

Maria is a member of the Russian Punk Band and Activist Group Pussy Riot.

An easy read in bite-sized pieces. And very interesting, albeit disturbing, detailing her times in and out of prison, detentions, house arrest and ankle-tagging as punishment for protest and opposition in Putin's Russia. A very brave woman, as indeed are her friends and colleagues who are undergoing similar punishment. Some of it is contemporaneous with Alexei Navalny's time in opposition.
