Hi all, I need to get a sleeping bag.

I'm a 5ft 2 woman, currently carrying some extra weight. I'm looking for recommendations for sleeping bags that would be a comfortable fit.

I've never slept outside on my own before, and I did have a sleeping bag but it's too small. I got it from Blacks several years ago, and at the time I didn't think to check whether it fitted me.

A 3-season bag would do, and it doesn't need to be down. What I need is to get comfy with sleeping outside for the first time.

I recently tried a "Pod: The Beast" from Go Outdoors. Although it was great in terms of size (and with room to spare), sadly the zip was crap - because the zipper came off the ends the first time I tried it, and it took me a good ten minutes to sort it out and even then it got misaligned. I don't fancy needing to do that again at three in the morning and losing body heat while I'm doing it. So it got returned to the shop.

Any thoughts? Thanks muchly.

How are you travelling?
Are you carrying kit or in a car?

My son and one daughter is in much the same case.
They roll up in double duvets and use good sleeping mats.

You might well fit in a large sized “90 pattern” ex army sleeping bag.

I have one of these. I am well over weight at 120 kilos and I can undress inside mine. (There are pockets for your clothes in there with you.)
They are about £50 used and are all quite old now.
I promise you, the zip won’t jam! It’s a feat of engineering.

The Berghaus Indulge has been superb for my girthsome self. Available on Amazon, so you can read the reviews there too. It is very bulky though.

I'm with @Pattree on the ex army sleeping bag. I got an unused one years ago, don't use the bucket bit, but I am comfortable in the bag....little fat lady :shy: (just measured, 47" bust )
My only issue is that the bag too blooming long, and in all the years I've had it I never got around to shortening it.

I too, especially if it's a car camp set up, just take along a duvet. I made an OD cover for mine :)

Just fold it under at the right length and blanket pin it. It’s well worth doing in cold weather as that a lot of extra volume to warm up.

My other sleeping bag is a Snugpak Chrysalis 5. It is equipped with clips for folding exactly like that for a child.

I admit that I'd just been tucking the extra inside and using the extra padding under my feet for comfort. I really ought to just sew it and make it properly shorter, just the shaping always sort of stopped me when I was in a hurry.

My other sleeping bag...nicked by Son1, was a Mammut, and I just could not sleep in that crysalis shaped thing. Son2 uses my Ajungilak one for the same reason, but he's six foot tall, and though broad shouldered he's sort of lean and rangy.

Look at the Snugpak range as you can buy extender panels for those of us who are slightly more padded :)
I have the Snugpak Softie Elite 2 which already has an expander panel built in, it also has hooks so you can shorten it if needed, not that I need those, but I do use the expander panel, it’s so much more comfortable. Standard size sleeping bags are just too snug for me. I really like it, I’ve been thinking of getting the 3 or 4 for in the depths of winter.

I got a big and burly bag that Western Mountaineering used to offer; about 10 years ago. Is was a second, so worth looking out for that. I spoke to them about their larger sizes, so that I could put another bag inside it. I had a feeling they may have sniggered politely when I told them my own physical dimensions. Some of the the WM bags are for hunters as much as lighter-weight mountaineering types. And some of those (often ex-services) who engage in the pursuit are as big as the Elk they chase down.

If travelling light......look at the Sierra Designs Cloud or Backcountry (down) zipless bags. If weight and bulk are not an issue, Snugpak (synthetic fill) do the "Elite" range which have built in expansion panels, and other bags can have zip in expansion panels?

I have both Sierra and Snugpak bags (with expanda, as they call it) panels, and can thoroughly endorse both.

Got another double vote for SnugPak and British Army, strangely via private message rather than here:

Im in the south west aswell south devon area cuddles are the best to keep warm. Anything snug pak british army etc.

Thanks for that additional bag recommendation. As for the other suggestion of keeping warm…. anyone who watched The Spy Who Loved Me knows that one, but that’s not the kind of advice (or offer) I am looking for, certainly not via private message from a person I don’t know, thanks.
