There will be a Solar eclipse on 12th August 2026. I am putting in my request that 2026's Moot includes those dates. Yeah I really do get (i) I am no real say in this, (ii) real possibility that 2026 dates have been sorted already, just not finalised, (iii) Only me actually gives a Monkeys .
Still I got to ask.... even if only to make a fool of myself.

Not to put a dampener on that but it will only be a partial eclipse, less than 50%, I reckon the best thing would be to move the entire Moot to Spain into the line of totality. That.s where I will be. I have seen 8 total eclipses and I will reach double figures the following year when Spain is again graced with a second total eclipse. I think it is the most amazing thing I have ever experienced. Life changing. I would urge everyone to go and see one n their life time x

Each to their own. I remember the last near-total UK eclipse, apparently that was in 1999, they shut the office and we all trooped out to experience it. Totally underwhelmed by the experience.

I also remember trooping out of the office in 1999. The sun happened to be shining onto the side of the office block. We just turned our backs to the sun and watched it play out on the huge "screen". Falstaff, sir, it was amazing.

I was in Africa, well outside the full eclipse band. In 1999.
I’ve experienced totality a couple of times. For me it isn’t so much the low light, the hush or the ring. It’s the realisation that something vast is happening, something that puts everything that I’m doing into perspective. Of course it’s happening all the time, as are much bigger things but an eclipse illustrates it at a human level.

There’s something cool about watching astronomy happen live in front of you, whereas usually it’s not observably kinetic.

As Pattree says, it adds a vast sense of perspective/scale to this unimaginably colossal, living universe we exist as a mere pinprick within.

We were on the line of totality in 1999. It was a typical Cornish August day - that is to say it was damp and overcast. The grey got a bit darker for a while, but otherwise very little to show for it. I find looking up at the stars on a clear night infinitely more humbling than our own local blobs of rock and gas getting in the way of each other.

Me too. Didnt see the sun (except on a Screen) but it was a completely awe inspiring experience.

You dont believe it will happen until you witness it.

Not far from you, and agree with you, we found it totally underwhelming. It got darker for a bit, then got light again, bit like every night in Shetland a couple of weeks ago.

Sorry my friend, dates for BushMoot 2026 are 27 July - 8th August. But, I have no problem sitting in the field with you staring at the sky on night and using our imaginations!
