There are diesel shortages in my area. Every garage in town is out. Good job I have 80ltrs of it stored in my garage....

Isn't there something about maximum allowable volume of diesel and petrol that can be stored by member of general public?

I'm not criticising your choice just curious and wondering if you've checked that out in case you're breaching some regulations. I know at my old company there were very strict rules regarding what was needed to store fuel oil and other oil based chemicals.

Being a company they got checked out a few times but you're unlikely to be.

Hrmm... I have tank with 2000L of kerosene in, and most farms have thousands of litres of red diesel; I doubt if Van-Wild is breaking any law - though I believe there are regulations about where a new tank can be placed relative to domestic premises.

I wouldn't either, it was a academic question.

Iirc you can keep certain volume in metal Jerry cans up to a certain size.

Different fuels have different issues. Work used to use a fuel that could leak from places later fuels could not leak from. Fumes too. Meant for different rules.

You can store up to 30L of petrol without informing the Petroleum authorities. Although I frequently have 2 x 20L Jerry cans here :)

You can store up to 200L of diesel, kerosene, or other 'heavy' oil before you have to meet a number of storage regulations but those are just the same as for a heating oil storage tank.

80L of diesel in 4 separate metal jerry cans is perfectly within the law as far as I can make out.

Thinking about storing a few cans of diesel, would i have to keep it in some sort of bunded area,.just in case of any leaks into drains.

I don't really want to go back to running my vehicle on veg oil but, as far as I know, there's no limit on how much veg oil you have stored.

Thanks, good to know.

Aiui there's a limit in volume in plastic containers in your vehicle though. I think there something like that in place in some us states too. During the buying panic earlier this year in Texas I heard about people driving around in pickups with a huge fuel container filling the bed up. I think one reported case the guy had linked it up to the vehicle's fuel system directly too.

Personally I'd rather not have a fuel stock in the garage at home. If there are ever any fuel shortages I'll just stop using the car. Better to prep based on alternative options as even 200 litres of diesel will run out and possibly before any crisis might have finished. It's why I'm living 2 minutes from a train station. If things get so bad that line shuts I doubt a fully fuelled up van will few much use anyway.

Yep, it's only 10L of petrol (some fuel stations say 5L) - that's all you're supposed to buy if your container is plastic. Steel Jerry cans you can buy 20L. The containers are supposed to be designed for purpose and marked.

I'm not aware of a limit on diesel other than the 200L storage.

It's already happening here. BP garages in town are all closed. Tesco half the diesel pumps are off.

The thing that makes me wander is when I see a que of vehicles a quarter mile up the road from the garage.... I wander if the panicking is starting already?

Quick! All out to bulk buy toilet roll!!!

Petrol Rationing.

I wouldn't mind if it was properly rationed but if it's just "you can only buy 10l at a time" then people in towns will just keep filling up and people further away from the stations will be a bit suffed.

I'm also finding the constant "we might not be able to buy loads of cheap tat and gorge ourself silly this Christmas" news reports more that a tad annoying.
