Hi thought I’d tap up the hive mind, my old walking boots are giving up the ghost and I though I might go for something a bit more practical. I’ll be mainly walking shorter distances (no more than 5 miles) but with muddy fields, woods and by the river. Anyone got any suggestions for welly boots or hunting boots. My feet are are a little bit of a mess after years of karate, skiing and climbing with a lot of breaks and dislocations. So comfy, waterproof and a bit higher than walking boots with a decent sole. Price wise, not sure depends what people recommend, but I want to move away from walking/mountaineering boots and keep those for longer days and trips.
cheers rich

Grubbs, Boggs, Mucks .... they all got good vibram soles on them, and you can roll the cuff up and down

You wanting Gore-Tex waterproof?

Five miles is still a distance. FWIW ... I wear trail runners out with the dog for those types of hike and longer. Just make sure I have wool socks on if it is wet and cold, for the warming of the feet even when wet; which invariably comes to pass.

Alternatively, there's an illustrated thread on ROF just now discoursing on the general amazingness of high Hanwags.

WaLking boots, AKU Pilgrim, usually get them off eBay new around £100. Wellies just bought Grubs. Local shops said they’d stopped stocking Muck boots because of complaints

What do you reckon to the grub boots you you’ve bought

I bought the winter boot, ‘snow’ something because of the vibrant sole. Warm comfortable boots only got them last week though.

I don't own them yet, because I still wear off my (pretty bad) German ones, but I think for short muddy walks in whet grass the light Austrian one is a good idea, because it doesn't degrade in the wardrobe like most modern stuff.

If you buy a modern glued construction, you usually can throw it away after 8 years or sooner. The Austrians are sewn together.

I’ll second the Aku pilgrim, fug ugly boot but so comfy, with the long lace length you can fine tune them to your foot.

Ive had many Wellies as Im never out of them this time of year and I tend to get through them quite fast. The best I’ve had are my current Skellerup Quattros. I’ve owned them 12 months and they’ve already outlasted more expensive ones. They’re comfy too.

Re Grubs ... For periods I just wear them and nothing else when it is snow/slush time. They fit very well, but the problem with that is you have to toe them off with some force and I have peeled off the sole on two pairs doing that. However, they are easily repaired with ShooGoo and come back better than new. Also, you can re-cut the tread of the vibram when they are worn and get a few more yards out of them.

Those AKUs look good. What is the fit like widthways, Scoman?

The Aku’s, lace down to the toe almost, which allows for greater adjustment, i have wide feet yet only have the medium fit on boot.

I just rolled an ankle while wearing altberg defenders. I really wish I had worn my usual Haix CWW boots as they have more support and are higher up the leg, but still the defenders probably saved me from a total snap rather than a hairline fracture.

I know you said keep away from mountaineering boots but because you said "hunting boot" I can't recommend the Haix enough. superb quality for the price. comfortable. reasonable weight and cheap. Not as adjustable as the AKU maybe but, A 9M fits me perfectly so pretty much choose your normal size. I've seen them as low as £80 brand new boxed with all the bits.

@lostplanet

That's approximately what the German army gets now too.
A lot of people swear by them.
Most german policemen choose Haix too.

(My old ones had been constructed for the general conscription army.)

Hope it mends soon. I have been looking at Altberg Military Ops boots a bit recently. I like the look on the flexible cuff.

Also Altberg have a Jorvik shoe which looks like it might work as an approach shoe. I need new approach type shoes now as the weather is turning. My Haglofs finally quit on me. Dug them out of the Winter box last week and can't for the life of me understand why I didn't give them a decent burial last Spring. Likely Meindls this time, but if I can find a decent reference for the Jorvik, who knows what might happen.
