Ash plate.

I've wanted to make a wood plate for a while now. I had a piece of Ash that I had split at one of the Suffolk meets two years ago, so I thought I'd put it to use. 8.5" dia, and 12.5" long, finished with Walnut oil. Took about five hours in all.

very nice! I have that finnish plastic/wood pulp kupilka set and the bowls have the handle on the side, it makes things a lot easier to carry when your flittin about camp. Really fancy making a wooden one now!

Cheers Hamish. Those Kupilka sets are good, but this is a lot heavier, 400g. It's a bit like making a big spoon.

Looks a awful lot like a trencher to me, the handles a nice touch, especially for eating wandering around. Do you get Stotties down there? The bottom of one of them would fit nicely I reckon, something to soak up all the juices...

When I can find a suitable bit of wood I'll have to try and copy that.

That did turn out well. Has never crossed my mind to carve a plate.
I get the sense that trenchers were bigger, deeper and more for wet foods like porridge or meat stews.
