Neck knife Safety.

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
fortunately i have not cut myself pulling my neck knife. BUT i'm either going to replace it soon or have to find a solution how to convert a down-wards-facing knife (sheath) into an upwards-facing one----> my "schrade extrem survival schf5n" makes a good EDC but somehow i have managed several times to pull out the knife accidentally when bending sharp over (seems the knife gets caught under my belt or folds of skin and then pulls out when straightening back up: too dangerous for my liking!

Dave I hope you don't think I was being facetious when asking if you were really cuting yourself drawing your knife? At present you wear a belt sheath, is it on your dominant side or do you crossdraw, would a horizontal draw sheath make things easier? Also how huch handle sticks out of the sheath to allow you to grasp?
I know fatigue can make up clumsy, a good reason to try and set up camp and have all the cutty things done before tierdness and darkness kicks in. (I know a lot of folk on here hate to hear an axe being used after dark, and especially after a tin or two). Another thing that might help is once the heavy work is done switch to a small folder in camp. I quickly switch over to my EDC which more often than not is a Opinel #6 or #8. Locks in place, small and easily handled and the best food prep knife you can carry. Such a nimble little blade that I rarely have accidents with it (so sharp though you don't feel them, but they heal very well.)
Just a thought as it can do most camp tasks and it easy to handle with less risk of cutting yourself.
I'm just not a huge fan of things 'round my neck having nearly throttled myself to death as a kid. Even things like compasses I used to attatch to a pocket rather than dangle them 'round my neck, but to each his own.

Of Course not Colin. Not at all. As they say 'theres no tone on the internet!'

Ok, time to come clean. A member on here knows Ive been after a Skookum in 3V for quite a long time.....theres a four year waiting list!......and he offered it to me yesterday, and I snapped it up.

This will now become my main user, and I'll be wearing it as a neck knife.....

Hence the curiosity about neck knives.

 Well done mate, you'll be a happy bunny with that. We'll need lots of pictures and reviews now mind - (or it didn't happen :D )
Congratulations mate.

I might have some cricket bat handle rubber sleeve that I've used on the skookum somewhere Dave, even though its leather the Skookum sheath is very stiff like plastic, roll on the rubber cricket bat sleeve and cut two slots in it and you can wear it on a belt.. Ill see if I can dig it out..

No, dont put yourself out mate. Its fine. I could just see my clumsy self chopping my own head off whilst extracting the blade, but Im sure it wont happen.

I'd rather wear it as a neck knife. Just wondered what peoples opinions were. Thats all. Cheers though. Best, Dave

Now that Goatboy has dragged the truth out of me with his clever interrogation techniques [!]

I suppose we better post a piccie or two.

That's pretty. You can wear it like a medal 'round your neck put there by Princess Leia. :D
'Tis a bonny knife and the sheaths no slouch either. I like that a lot.
Good luck with the try sticks (good fun) and keep the FAK handy just in case. Be good to ear how you get on.

Ahhh, I remember you trying to get rid of your fingerprints when sharpening a knife! Blimey Dave, stay away from the neck knives... you'll have an eye out! :p

I often look at neck knives though and wonder... if you fell over and that thing gets stuck in you... ewww. It must have happened to someone at some point??

Van Gogh has always been misrepresented about that you know... he had an argument with a banana is all and it viciously took his ear off. I have proof....

This old chestnut keeps cropping up, and ruud nailed it in post #13.
Neck knife carry is perfectly safe with the right knife, and correct sheath set up.
Why carry handle up on a high loop if you think you may injure yourself when un sheathing?
Handle down, and snug fitting kydex is the way forward, and anybody that carries a MORA in one of their bog standard and unmodified sheaths, is asking for trouble.
I have used this MORA 510 + Rapidboy kydex for stalking and vermin control more than any other knife I own, including my high end customs, and retention and safety have never been an issue.

Theres some good advice on here, and I'll be taking some of it. Good to hear the different methods people use.

I prefer my knife on the belt dangle style. I am guessing the neck fashion was brought about in bushcraft from origins in first nations who did not wear waist belt clothing and therefore had little choice. In that case if your used to if from the moment you have a knife there is more practice and lets say less risk.

Tried it that way myself found it uncomfortable and tended to turn the sheath horizontal any way.
