Other than the back of a knife and the ready-made strikers that come with some of these rods, what do people use as a striker?

And does anyone have any suggestions for fabricating a striker - perhaps from something everyday, or even something unusual?

I use the back of a tops folding saw, the back of a folding knife, the awl off an ALOX SAK and a bushkey/flint and steel striker from sharkdesigns

Anything with a straight sharp edge (and that's of a harder material than the ferro rod) will work.

I've used the spine of my front door key, and even got a tiny spark using the point of a partially unfolded paperclip.

I've also read (on here) people had success with a piece of glass ... Have to give that a try myself one day: see to believe ...

In the woods if possible.
A while back I did a group buy on some specially made strikers, and they are streets ahead of anything else I've used. Check the GB threads for details. Between us we bought over eighty of them!

The main thing if you're going to make one is to have a very hard material (high speed steel works well, some hacksaw blades for example as has been mentioned) and a very sharp edge - not a knife edge, but what is effectively a very square corner.

FGYTs striker is the nuts. I compared it to the nano striker that Ged is talking about and it performs at the same high level and has the added benefit of being able to use it with flint. Highly recommended. Much easier and safer than using a knife back.

I developed the plain one with Mark at Shark Designs so he could offer a basic striker that works very well and is made in England and replace the plastic handles one he got from China (works very well) unfortunately we cant get it quite as low priced SO hopefully adding in the ability to strike flint helps offset the extra cost.

Bushkeys rock!
Best striker I have is a Corona carbide sharpening tool from the USA. Get them from Survival Resources website, bit big but really good.
May be a good idea to do a group buy from the manufacturer or supplier.
Personally I only use light my fire rods, most of the others are crap IMO.

Thanks for all the replies - we've been monkeying around with a bit of hacksaw and all sorts - not flint tho' - but we will now do so.

The munchkin loves the magic of flint since the first time I "Hit two stones together and made a knife"

Hmm, I really like the look of the FGYT one:cool:

but I prefer something a bit more "multi-purpose" myself
