Stuck chuck - lathe

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
If you can hold a bar or stout piece of wood in the jaws across the face of the chuck it will give you some extra leverage. If you can hold the spindle or wheel on the opposite side of the headstock still somehow then better still, but if not sometimes a sharp shock on the bar in the chuck will do it.

Once you get it off make up a thin washer from plastic milk carton or something and leave that on the spindle to stop the chuck jamming on again.

I had that too. Sprayed masses of wd40 at it, and just kept working at it,, more out of frustration than anything else. It came free eventually, but I gave up on it several times.

Heat risks damaging the grease in the bearings and therefore the bearings themselves, unless very moderate heat....... Keep going with the wd40, or specialist penetrating spray which should be a bit more effective, and sharp blows on the bar in the chuck. It will work eventually .... :)
