i currently use one like this as my everything top layer in all weathers http://www.militarymart.co.uk/index.php?_a=product&product_id=1351 while unbelievably warm its not waterproof or small(in fact its huge) i have slept outdoors using just this before

what i need is something warm, waterproof and that packs down fairly economically for its features. im happy if it isnt lined(quilted) as i have other warm layers to go under it. also very happy to go for army surplus stuff as i believe you get good quality kit for small(er) prices.

what would you guys recommend?

I was in the same boat recently, I called into a local Winfields these were the ones which piqued my interest at the time:

Ultra cheap and highly packable - one size only it seems:

Or, slightly more folding stuff, not as packable but less Walt and in more sizes:

I ended up buying one a Highlander Tempest in the end as packability wasn't the greatest issue for me and they had matching over trousers in the sale which was running - IIRC jacket was about £33 and the trousers £19 - the trousers do roll up nice and small and fit in one of the generous side pockets. Winfields don't seem to be stocking the plain green Highlander at the moment, but they do have this camouflage one:

Loads of options available Tom. Have a look at Regatta/Trespass '3 in 1' jackets, waterproof shell with a zip in fleece. The wax jacket idea is also good; no good for fell running or if your working hard but for playing in the woods they have a lot going for them and won't break the bank. The army desert pattern goretex jackets are cheap to buy new on ebay and they (unlike most DPM goretex jackets) have pockets.

Keela Munro

that looks like an excellent jacket, and about £100 more than i can afford :(

I have a waxed jacket I bought from a carboot sale for £5, I recently reproofed it making my own wax blend:

You could do this to your existing coat if you like it or pretty much any cotton, cotton blend jacket making it both wind and rain proof. It's cheap, quick, simple and it works :)

this is a very good idea. i may do this anyway as if it work ill still use my 'epic' coat for the very cold winter camps. but i want something that is also going to not be overkill in the summer months

highlander tempest sounds excellent, that ones on the list for sure

If you don't mind army surplus, have a word with Kev at Endicott's. They sell army goretex jackets and trousers very cheaply indeed. They're sound, take a lot of wear and won't break the bank. I'm pretty sure it was unissued ones that he had.

We get these issued at work (park ranger). Fantastic Jacket

wish i got nice lothes from work, lucky if i get paid :(

Just put a waterproof (anyone) over the coat you own. layer principle and when not raining just use the M90. It is a good coat.

Can recommend the Keela Munro and the issue ones.

yeah it is, had it for about 6 years and its still going strong. i even got another 2 years ago for when this one dies, not sure when ill need it tbh.

but im trying to find something more suited to warmer times use. as the m90 is so feckin big it takes up half my 65 litre pack if i put it in there
