A couple of the places i car camp i pitch right next to the motor, im wondering if its worth trying to incorperate the two together.
my suggestion was given on the basses of what you asked about.

Its not for the meets. If im out and want a quick setup overnight or on the camp site i dont need a tent.
What im hoping is to just throw the tarp over and peg it down, two poles to lift the front and done.

I did not mention anything about meets.

if its for a quick overnighter simple lean to off the back or side with corner guy lines running over your motor and pegged so their is a over lap of the tarp on to the roof works well. i wouldn't want to leave my car open on a camp site unless their is always going to be someone you trust about.

Off the side is good but often the shape of a car doesnt allow you to pitch it well, and after Martins idea of using the open boot as admin space sounds good.
The biggest benifit to pitching off the side would be the amount of space taken up. Off the rear would make it probably too long.
What i do like the look of is on the DD site there is a pic of a hammock that has been hung between two landies. I could do this with one tree and my roof bars.

There is no way i would leave the car unlocked or even any gear outside while i was away from it.

Have a look at a British company called carnopy.I've got one for car booting.
