How times have changed, down here in South Wales back in the late 80's and early 90's people were lucky to get £30 for an Aga or a Rayburn stove, often they were just skipped in their rush to get something 'nice and modern' for the kitchen :(

Our first home on the West Coast of New Zealand had a coal range. Took some lessons from the neighbors wife to learn how to turn it on. Even today, some forty plus years on, I still miss that pile of cast iron. We never let the fire go out in ten years, and I always had dry warm boots in the morning. Just had to remember to get them out of the oven, before raking up some more heat. Just try drying leather boots in a modern oven.

We used to have a wood burner in the kitchen but it wore out and we went for an oil burner replacement - bad move!
We recently replaced the open fire in the living room with a multi-fuel stove and cook on top of that a fair bit.
