Recycling Old Down Jackets into Sleeping Bags ? and vice versa ?

Hi All,
I've a couple of old down duvet jackets, in which the outer is just about giving up the ghost, and I would like to turn them into something usefull. I reckon there is about 750 g of down which is enough to make a sleeping bag I think.

I'm sure there used to be a firm that would do this, or the other way with your sleeping bags, by removing the down and using a new outer and inner casing into which your down is packed. I've searched for them but can't seem to find any evidence of their existence anywhere. Anyone know of such a firm / company ?

Alternatively has anyone on the forum made such a re-use of old down ?

Spartan, do you hammock camp? Maybe ukhammocks can use your down in an under quilt? I don't know if they would but they're nice blokes and might be able to point you in the right direction if they don't do it.

I remade an ancient Eiderdown into a down jacket .. one of my first clothing projects (about 30 years ago) and found the process easy enough if a bit messy!
The garment was not the best I have ever made but it certainly worked - until some theiving toerag broke into our car in Patterdale and nicked it along with the rest of my camping gear :(

Could you buy the cheap tesco down bag, unstitch it and inject the extra down?

Yes, I was thinking maybe about that, I thought also of buying a synthetic bag, takeing all the stuffing out of the upper side and putting it in the base, as it will be compressed that side, then filling the top of the bag with the down from the jackets I have. It wouldn't be the lightest or smallest bag in the world but I reckon it would be pretty warm :)

Hi,
I'm a ground dweller at the moment. I did however, by googling "reconditioning down" as opposed to "recycling down", manage to find the firm I was after, they are Mountain Designs, based in the lakes, so I'll be giving them a call this weekend :)
