Which Jerven to buy?

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
i am slowly raising funds towards a jerven bag (slowly being the main word in that sentance)
so owners of jervens which one would you buy?
i can probably afford the jerven bag original this coming pay day
or should i wait for my cash to build up and get the thermo hunter?

what do you advise?

I have the Exclusive and personally like the fact you can seperate the Jerven bag from its liner. Something you can't do with the Thermo Hunter. The Original doesn't has a liner. Seperating it makes it more versatile: put the bag up as a tarp and use the liner as sleeping bag. If conditions are dire: zip it all together and and crawl into it.

If you already made up your choice between the two you mention, then I personally would go for the Thermo Hunter.

Check the sizes on the original 143x143, its not that big where as the thermo hunter 102x220 and the King size 143x220 you could totally encapsulate yourself.

I know they are more expensive but better that than being unhappy with what you get.

I would go for the Exclusive with the lighter weight liner. As Ahjno has pointed out, it gives you greater flexibility; I've found the lighter liner to be just the job in U.K. conditions. If it gets significantly colder, you can always add a sleeping bag.

They are a very versatile, if quirky, piece of kit.

Personally? !'d go (and probably will) for the king-size one - gives you more options. The swappable linings for the Exclusive seem kinda cool, but at a horrendous price! And as far as I can gather from those who have them, any moisture gained overnight rapidly disposes from the fixed linings when aired in the morning.

To add: I'd go for the lighter weight liner if I was 'buying' again (eventhough it was a present ;)), just add a 3 season sleeping bag in winter (as Tiley said). The heavier weight is a tad too warm for my liking (and I'm a relative cold sleeper), then again: I 'bought' it with a Canada exped in mind.

Hope Sam doesn't mind for going slightly OT: do you have the dimensions for the bag as a roll please mate? The 200 gr/m2 liner I have (currently no longer sold, but they now make a 170 gr/m2) is about 50cm (20 inch) in length and about 20cm (8 inch) in diameter.

Where did you get hold of the exclusive in the uk? or did you get it from abroad?
the two i listed were what i could find available at a certain webstore that begins with a W

I got mine direct from Jerven in Norway form their online shop. They were very helpful and efficient in getting the Exclusive and liner to me.

Ive not long had a extreme(only used it on a twodayer so far) it packs smaller than i though(roll matt size)so can either go in a large pack or on outside of a small pack, only summer so i was very very warm in it,the exclusive does give good options but the extreme was as far as my budget would stretch got it from R.M.s site very happy with it and cant wait to get out more to use it. just a quick final point its big and roomy and im 6ft 3 and 16st.

I bought the termo XL the biggest one they do as every where i read up on them they recommended the XL as they are the most versatile even the makers recommend it over the others that was good enough for me.

I am going to buy the kingsize jerven bag from woodlore as it's the biggest size, maybe I'll be able to buy it next week.
