no marks...is it a carving hatchet?

I noticed that though the poll is sturdy it has mushroomed due to bashing...evidently not hardened.

coal hammer is a bit different, this looks like it was made from a splitting wedge.

my thoughts exactly, it looks like someone taken a splitting maul and re-forged the edge out to give it a longer cutting edge. although i cold be completely wrong

cheers

It's a bit on the small side for a splitting mall don't you think? ;)

Even a re-forged one.

A few more pics would help Tengu! What's the profile like?

Could easily be an old smith made kindling hatchet. It almost looks like a cold cutter, indeed if the head was a bit more mushroomed I'd be tempted to go with that. Is the edge a bit blue? Looks it in the picture.

I dont think its a maul; the poll would be hardened, woulnt it?

Ill get more pics up later; very busy today

i know a blacksmith who told me that the easiest way to make a good hatchet was to get hold of an old lump hammer and work one end of it which looks kinda similar to what's happened to this little creation, also if the poll had been hardened then it would be more prone to fracturing and chipping so couldn't really see why a smithy would do that to an axe poll
