good widemouth stainless steel -bottle?

  • Hey Guest, Early bird pricing on the Summer Moot (29th July - 10th August) available until April 6th, we'd love you to come. PLEASE CLICK HERE to early bird price and get more information.
as i spent a lot of time in hot and humid places i tend to carry always some water with me. my main-setup is the common combination of army-style 1l bottle with (australian army)ss-cup in a beltpouch(mine is an older olive green british version, a bargain for 5NZ$ from an armyshop in christchurch/new zealand(sadly destroyed by last years earthquake...). however, when just out in the backyard or on a short trip i find it too uncomfortable to carry. my second bottle is a NVA-bottle(750ml)--> lighter but no ability to boil (purify)water in case things went wrong(the aluminium cup which came with it got discarded straight away- NO aluminium for food/water for me!!!) or to enjoy a cup of tea.
the solution would be a solid stainless steel- bottle of ca. 500ml with a wide mouth(which can be used to boil H2O as well), but so far my search was fruitless- either too thin, and/or too small opening... .

can anyone recommend me one?

thanks!

I have been using bottles from onegreenbottle in the past and they are fine. I also wanted to carry on me somethin allowing water storage, transport and purification.
However I settled for an HDPE Nalgene 1 liter (110 grams) + titanium Alpkit mug, fitting the base of the nalgene. Around same weight than the 1L onegreenbottle and more flexible.
Nalgene Oasis are also HDPE bottles, in canteen format and compatible with US mug and Crusader.

Nalgene Guyot design stainless steel mug - 1100 ml.
Combines with Katadyn water filters and splash guard. Cap is easy to remove from the mug. Mug can then directly into the fire to boil or sterilize water. For the moment it is out of stock, in stock from 15 march 2012. It`s expensive, but one of the best there is.

thanks for the replies so far! i'll be coming through christchurch(NZ) tomorrow before heading to the other side of the earth again- see if i can find one in town which suits my needs. wish my 500ml "tatonka" bottle would be wide-mouthed: it's really solid and has survived some rather hard impacts(caused by others!)- sadly it's too narrow to squeeze a teabag in and get it out again... .

I would recommend you do not use Qvist. I "bought" one of those bottles from them months ago and only recently got my money refunded to me. In the end I was emailing everyday and I had to start quoting European trading standards because they just wouldn't respond. Their customer service leaves a LOT to be desired. I also would not trust that in-stock date. I was given about 5 different dates which kept getting pushed back. Avoid.

Probably the best wide mouth stainless bottle out there though. I have a Klean Kanteen wide mouth which has been fantastic, it has been knocked about a lot and still feels solid.

I have a Human Gear bottle cap for my Nalgene bottle - looking on their site, the lid is also compatible with Camelbak Better Bottles. Unlike the Guyot Designs one they appear to be readily available in the UK, albeit with a hefty price tag.

http://humangear.com/capcap-compatibility.html

Interesting that, I have to tighten my Capcap onto my Klean Kanteen like a mother to get it not to leak, and on that site it says that's the only brand they don't guarantee a tight fit on. That sucks.

I guess the only mug-nesting stainless steel bottle that the Capcap works with is the Nalgene/Guyot one.. :(

all the outdoor shops i knew in christchurch got destroyed by last years earthquake but i found a stand on the street, run by a nice old lady(who was luckily not on her usual place in the worst-affected area(cathedral plaza) when the quake happened...). it's called "H2onya"(no connection to maker!)- now it's time for some testing to see how it performs... .

I'm after a wide mouth Kleen Canteen but not sure which size I need which will nest into a steel cup. I guess either the 27 or 40oz. Anyone have one who can help?

I have no fear of aluminum cookware, it was all a scam to sell coated cookware. Your body absorbs more aluminum from Anti-perspirant and antacid tabs than it ever will from cooking in aluminum and as long as you do not polish the inner surface no problem. It is the oxidizing while cooking that releases aluminum, once it has dulled no problem.

it's not a fear of aluminium- it's from an experience in a previous life when i was forced to eat from a kraut army messtin (despite being not a kraut i was forced to serve in their military (rather long story...) -made from the cheapest material you can imagine... . not only difficult to clean but the spoon made an absolute awful noise when scratching along the inside of the container :yikes: . even i with my infamous appetite lost my appetite.

and i give antiperspirants a WIDE berth as well as they make me sick(and rather have a shower more often!)- a horrible headache being the mildest result.... (ooopps, am i getting :offtopic: now?)

I think it's the 40oz Klean Kanteen (i know it approx 1200ml) I have, which is great quality and has never leaked for me, and it fits in the Tatonka mug perfectly. Does anyone know how heat proof the seal is? As I often use it to boil water in it, but tend to wait for it to cool before putting the lid on incase the heat buggers the seal.

Cheers
