I know this reply comes over a decade later, but maybe a couple people will still read it.
I knew yew was poisonous, yet somehow when my friend took me to a great yew tree from which he'd make a bow, I took a spoonblank without thinking about it. (oiled it with flaxseed oil) I made a spoon from it which became special to me and I ended up eating most of my meals with it. I only thought about it's supposed toxicity last week and decided to Google it.
So I can vouch: it can be safe - I have no noticable bad effects at all. It might differ from tree to tree and parts of trees, but I simply have an awesome hard spoon with beautiful color gradient. But I will keep away from yew in the future to be on the safe side.
It was a yew tree in the state of Washington FYI.
