Wot I made for Christmas :)

Hi All,

Following on from other similar threads in this forum area, here are some items that I have made for family inter-house presents. This year they are all cutting/bread/cheese (delete as applicable) boards, and intended for use. One is made from a waste piece of English walnut found in a wood suppliers junk bin, and the others are all made from a single board of rippled maple. All were sawn, shaped, sanded and finished by hand. Final finish for all was several coats of very hot walnut oil (heated in a microwave), and time allowed for polymerisation in direct sunlight, as far as possible in the last month or so

So here are the pictures......

Absolutely. I can say for sure that there will be cheese aplenty in the coming weeks....The big problem now is that we dont have a board for our home . There was only enough in the maple board to make gifts for our relatives, so I shall have to visit the wood shop and keep my eyes open

Lovely work! The ripple of the maple grain is stunning - they look like objects that one would just like to hold and touch, and never mind the cheese! You have some lucky relatives.

They're really nice mate, it's a good feeling to make gifts and saves a few quid as well.

The other half has a large family and I did the same thing a couple of years ago but using the heads from some of my whisky barrels, solid oak and smells lovely as you work on them

Thanks all! I was lucky in keeping my eyes open for a nice board at the wood suppliers (Surrey Hardwoods), so most of the beauty is inherent in the wood. I just did the necessary

RV, you're correct - I did want them to be users, so all were big enough to be used with hearty, crusty loaves like my missus makes....

Dogoak, whisky barrel oak sounds like a great resource. Not too much of it around in Surrey though!

Whoever receives one of these for Christmas will be very lucky - I certainly would be.
