Does anyone know what wood this is? someone gave a small bit to me to carve and I was going to split it for my mums fire as it looked like an old piece but as I started to cut it, it was actually still quite green and had a great grain pattern. I have decided to keep it.
The bark actually looks a lot greener and darker in colour than the pictures show and the main part which is now chopped down for me to carve had an almost chequered pattern to it. The cut ends were almost black in colour?

this picture makes it look like silver birch but its not grey at all and it seems to be a lot harder than the silver birch I already have.

An extremely fine cross section surface would be a big help.
I have some experience as a wood collector and an expert witness in court.
Otherwise, it is:
a) DUNNOwood = don't know what it is
b) FOGwood = Found On Ground

If it carves OK, go for it.

Another vote for Polar, though I've seen Birch develop the diamonds too.

It was a nightmare to split to be honest. I had a Y piece which I am chopping and carving and its getting smaller and smaller at the moment lol.

Ah yes.....I remember those logs to split with nasty knots and so on......nowadays I have so much wood I can afford to be a "Log Tart" and only the nice strait bits go back to my house the rest is given away or chipped :)
