I thought this was interesting. The same patch as my earlier photo but after a very wet autumn and winter. Soil is acidic clay and it appears that a large patch of mature bulbs have died out and a google does show that bulbs are prone to rotting if too wet. It seems that there are plenty of new seeds emerging so the patch should grow back fairly quickly.
