Hi all

I love bushcraft but find at this time of year i like a tent, so my Q is ,
What tent do you use in this rainy weather and how do you rate its warmth and waterproofing capabillities.

many thanks

Don

im gonna be using a gelert rocky 4 that i recieved today from a generous member of bcuk hopefully if the kids do not like the tarp they can then sleep in the tent
cheers eds

:D :D :D

Hilleberg Nammatj 2 GT.

If you are looking for a tent, pick one that sets the outer tent up first. You can hang the inner tent inside while being protected from the rain.
I have seen fancy expensive North Face tents with the "bathtub floor" full of water!
It was raining so hard that the floor was filled with water before they could throw the flysheet on. I do admit this is a bigger problem with tents that have a mesh inner tent.

I'm pretty impressed by my Vaude Ferret. (more pics if you scroll down the page). It's very waterproof and having used it at the xmas bushmoot with temperatures -2 to -3C, it was quite snug. You can pitch both inner and outer at the same time which is a bonus. You can get them for about £100 if you look around.

i tend to use my Saunders Satellite all the time

but them im a cycle camper so i need to keep kit size down, ive never realy understood the whole tarp thing, especialy as most of u seem to drive to your locations..
ive had the tent since i was about 16.. thats a little over 20 years and only had to replace one section of the hoop pole (sent back replacement section and returned restrung for £7)

Its got to be the Big Horn 2 for me, the best I have ever come across.

My main tent is a Eurohike 275, very similar to the Avon. Its a smallish dome with a porch and just right for me will all my crap, I can sit in the porch with the stove just outside. I don't use the porch groundsheet as it just traps the rain when the door is open. It cost me £15 on e-bay second had a few years back and has been terrific :)

I agree with the outer first ideal, my big tent is the other way round and a few years vback we flooded the inner trying to put it up in pouring rain. We spend ages bailing it out and used our towels to try and dry the floor. It was only afterwards that I relaised it would have been easier to make a small drain hole and then tape it up afterwards :o

Having said that if I were buying one now it would probably be Vango, they are just so well made and a realy good company to deal with.

The only make that I am wary of is Khyam, I know some people swear by them but I don't like the idea of those quick erect poles that would be a pig to swap if damaged. At least with most dome tents you can use a generic pole replacement pack :)

Zodiak - I think there's an echo in here!

I have a Macpac Microlight for lightweight camping/mountain marathons and the like - it's very well builit and can actually survive well in winter conditions if you are careful about how you orientate it to the wind.

My mate has a Marmot 4-season which we use for mountaineering but, frankly, that is way over the top for normal UK winter camping.

The weirdest tent that I have was also the cheapest: I got a two-man self-erecting tent from Decathlon (European sports and outdoor hypermarket - there's a few in the UK now, too). It was 25 Euros (about 17 quid) and I didn't believe it would work (which begs the question, 'Why did you buy it then, you dork?').

I used it in the Alps as a 'base camp' tent on a mountaineering trip, pitched next to my car, and it worked as advertised! It was warm, waterproof, and it erected in two seconds! It packs down into a large flat disc shape, so wouldn't be much use for backpacking. Cheap as chips - works well!

Because it erects so quickly, you don't have to worry about water getting in - my only criticism is that the one I got doesn't have much of a porch on it.

another vote for Hilleberg from me. Except I opted for the Nallo2 GT as far as weight to room ratio Its pretty hard to beat and so adaptable.

I have a fair few tents and the Nallo is the one that sees the most usage tho Ive just ordered a black diamond Megalight which for most times of the year I suspect will be fine.

How often do you think you will be using a tent ? and do you want one for all conditions ?

I've had numerous tents in my time and I use them until they die on me or they get given away:

First tent 1980's Blacks Stormsheild 200- a copy of the peapod, great tent lasted about 6 years before the fly sheet gave in with uv damage (£160)

Second tent Khyam 20 sec tent (Hiker or something it was called £130)-it has got to be the warmest most waterproof and stable and most bombproof tent I've ever used. It has survived force 7 gales and the poles never even bent in when every other tent collapsed! I gave it away to my bro and he is still using it now.

Third Tent- Wild Country Hoy-The lightest tent I have. Crap. The first time I used it the zip broke so I sent it back, the second one I got the zip sticks and the tent is just not well designed. Waterproof for the most part but sags when wet...I rarely use it now only for ultra lightweight trips. However for £50 in the end of season sale it's the best of a bad bunch when it comes to cheaper tents.

Fourth Tent- Royal Marines Issue Arctic Tent 4 man tent- a much heavier but absolutley bombproof and waterproof tent, very warm. It's a copy of a hilleberg.(£100 new from a surplus dealer). A great tent but very big. Good for car camping or canoe camping. I use this for around 2 weeks every year.

Fifth Tent-An American Marine issue 2 man cammo combat tent made by Diamond.(£70 ebay) Absolutley stormproof, good solid reasonably light, 2 person tent that is very very warm and waterproof. I use it when I kayak/canoe and in winter a lot.

Sixth Tent -Bison Tinde 8 8 person nylon tipi. (£260 including postage from Norway) Fantastic tent to use. Used it in GlenEtive last week in the pouring rain and it was fantastic however it was hard finding a 5 meter area space to put it up. Warm with a stove going inside. This is the family tripping tent.

So all in all I have the last 4 tents and use the regulalry for different kinds of trips.

I use a Khyam, forget what it is had it a long time. Great to put up and never had much problem with the poles but the thought of them breaking is a worry.

I like the look of the Terra Nova Voyager and there is also a super light version which seems to be almost as strong.

I'd also check out Cheap Tents

Never used them, no connection etc but they have some very good prices.

Anybody else ever used them?

TENTIPI dead easy to put up, very waterproof. And as you know it can take a heater or fire...

Got a variety of mountain tents for expeditions etc but much preffer the tipi

and then of course TARPS

Can highly recommend Vango tents, as a manufacturer they've been around for years and always seem to manage to keep up with if not forge ahead of any competitors. My very first tent was a Vango "Force Ten" (25 years ago), an absolute bombproof if slightly heavy cotton canvas tent bought second hand from a scout troop who were downsizing on their equipment. That tent did me proud for the best part of 10 years until i lent it to someone who packed it away wet :(.

Tried various other makes of tent in between that and the current one, most never lasting more than a year as i wasn't happy with some aspect or other of their performance. Bought the very first generation Vango "TBS Equinox" about 5/6 years ago and can't rate it highly enough, has stayed stable and kept us dry during force 8 gales on cliff tops and during torrential downpours and a mini tornado. Wouldn't now be without it and if and when i need a new one i will be looking to Vango again to supply it.

I want a tent to go on the top of my landrover...Anyone know of a tent that would fit on the top of a LWB with a brownchurch full cage roof rack....

There are several manufacturers of roof top tents eg Hannibal, Eezi Awn, Howling Moon, as to whether they will fit the Brownchurch or not, best bet is to join a Land Rover forum and seek advice there too.
