Some of my synthetic gear is over ten years old and still working 100%. I use it hard but I retreat where needed. What destroys synthetic gear is constant washing at high temps with softners and the like.

I wash synthetics probably erm.... Once every few months..... even then I wash with specific to material cleaners, never use softners and always at the coolest temp I can. I don't tumble dry either.

Natural fibres are great if you're around fires and not contantly on the move. Covering distance in the mountains for days on end in inclement weather, with no opportunity to spend hours drying stuff out by a fire? Not so good.....

I choose layers that can be totally saturated and I can literally walk myself dry in a few hours, my body heat doing the job as I move. Synthetic materials don't hold onto water like natural fibres do.

As for the smell, it's never been an issue for me. My hair cleans itself after about a week, especially if I spend time in the evening combing it. I wash either every morning or every evening, depending on the weather and I keep an eye on not over heating so I don't sweat too much!

Merino wool. Other wool drives me nuts.
I did try a wool Brynje tshirt but despite following the instructions it shrunk to about half size. My nipples now poke through cos it's so tight and it only keeps me warm above my belly button.
A custom dry suit would be good if you dive with it and are an odd size or inflating will push the boots off your feet :) Otherwise I wouldn't think excess material anywhere would matter much?
