What woods can one use to make a kuksa besides birch?

i've just started one in oak, it's tough work and haven't a clue if it crack etc. Think it'll be a long time till i find out too, rate i'm goin with my hammer and chisel :)

The nature of kuksa requires a burl, any other wood will eventually crack. However any hardwood equivalent to birch will do.

Basically any wood you can carve can be made into a Kuksa... just some are harder than others.

I've seen examples carved out of Alder, Sycamore, Birch, Maple, Willow, and some other woods that I can't remember right now.

Whatever you do, try and avoid box! Yes, it is very beautiful but it is also incredibly hard and, as Dave Budd pointed out, just like carving fossilised butter...

Pretty much anything else is fine though some will crack more readily than others.
