On the Misty Isles there is of course the odd chance of more exotic species, not long ago somebody commented on Victorian englismen bringing in all kinds of trees trying if they happened to stay alive. Probabilities favour the more common ones but my books give some 7 species of ash that could be occasionally met not counting some tens of other genera.

the best 4 quid purchase of the day, I'd say I'm 99% sure it's ash now after reading this. It's the only one that mentions the pink tinge when first cut and its ring porous too.

Now there's another book for the list. I've not seen that one before.

Ash makes sense with the colour and grain. I cut some big rounds about 4 months ago. It had lots of what, I'd guess to be, looked like dieback through it.
Smelt exactly as others have described.

A new book and a solution! Win win!
