Having a pretty decent crop of walnuts from the tree in my garden.

First batch are dry and have made the obligatory coffee and walnut cake. Started experimenting using the outer bits to make dye for cloth currently trying on a white wool blanket.

Also have wonderfully fake tanned hands from picking and shucking, but that's where my knowledge ends wandering if anyone has any uses, recipes, crafty, or 'bushcrafty' things to do with all my nuts;)?

reading the title I'm afraid my mind boggled slightly !!! Reading the meat of the post the cake and dyeing sound good. You can just store them to eat later. If you have any spares that would go in the post I'll have some ... squirrell was very hungry this year for my walnut tree  :)

Know what you mean about the tanned hands, haha, mine are two weeks on and still stained !!!

Tend to just eat mine, a few at a time, might shell some to add to my breakfast muesli as well perhaps :)

Cheers, Paul

There are plenty of vegetarian recipes that use nut meat as the protein component. Have you ever tried a nut roast? Done well they are surprisingly good.

I'd love to try dying with walnut hulls but I've seen no trees around here. A few years back, not having read up on the process , I bought a load of post Christmas surplus walnuts cheap thinking it was the shells you used. D'oh!

best of luck with what ever you choose to use em for!

Tom

Ps is it possible to press them for the oil?, I've no idea if its easily done with domestic kit. Great stuff for using on spoons and eating bowls.

The old trappers used to boil their traps with loads of old walnut shells to remove human scent. I know y'all don't do that kind of trapping but the principle should transfer to some other activity.

The dried and ground shells also used to be used as a mildly abrasive cleaning media.

I have had a huge haul. Currently working my way through the following.

Use instead of pine nuts to make pesto (and other Italian cooking).

Crush roughly and add to bread dough.

Salad made of leaves, crispy lardons and walnuts.

After "THE STORM" I now have a pornographic amount of walnuts. Thank you all for all your ideas, would love to hear more about how to make walnut oil / butter at home; if anyone has had any experience.
