I recently recieved a message from Dave Barker, I would like it if people had a read through, he didn't want to post this as he wasn't sure if it would be classed as advertising, although I have my opinions on what he does with this blade what does everyone else have to say, what should Dave do?

Here is a pic something that i would like an opinion on.

The blade is by eklund and has been etched with figures of people etc. i think it looks really primitive and would maybe turn heads in the bushcrafting world.

my question is this, would the etchings on this blade cause a problem with regard to its function as a bushcraft knife.

I am going to make it up with most likely an exotic wood, but before i decide which, I would like to know if it would be considered a user or a display item. It will make a difference as to what i make it up with.

I love the figures that have been etched into the blade!

Thanks

So folks what do we all think:)

I'm not the world's greatest technical authority on knives but here goes with random thoughts. It appears to be a scandi grind, which seems to be free of etchings, so I wouldn't imagine the etchings higher up have any impact on its cutting function. Also they're quite attractive. The other issue might be how deep the etchings are....some clogging could develop though that might not be a problem if they're not too deep and are of the kind seen on many other makers' knives. Just a couple of thoughts to kick things off....

I think it looks ace! (was thinking about doing something allong similar lines)

My thoughts..... I reccon it can't be any worse than the very rustic looking forged blades you can get - surely they are 'rough'

To me it looks like the etching is fairly shallow and in fact is kinda in reverse... ie the background is etched rather than the picture so the roughness if any will be essentially regular over the whole blade!

but then again, what do i know!

i dont think that its decoration will compromise usability in anyway.. i think they are very nice.. in this case i have no doubt the blade will make do very well at being either a user or a draw queen and as such i guess it comes down to who ever buys it from Dave.

ooooowww nice!!!

Well my comments:

Regarding the knife:
Looks great, and I would certainly use it! It's something different to what we normally see. Makes it even more clear it's a tool and not a weapon. Decorations are also connected to the bushcrafty world, like it very much. The idea is so simple, why haven't we seen it earlier? (Or did I missed something?).

On the techy site - well "techy", just my common sense:
I would place (easily said than done ...) the figures a bit more from the edge & spine, and don't make the figures to big (see the figure near the blades tip). To prevent them "falling of the knife" Sharpening and the like. Though this is just esthetic talk ;)

Regarding the posting:
Well that's not the question at the moment - though wanted to say Dave fixed the dilemma as a true gent (saw your thread you edited).
Reading the mail he sent Leon (even) I do understand he is not advertising, etc. but asking for our opinions.

A good lesson can be learned from this: if in doubt, contact a mod, they're only a PM away :D

Such looks rather familiar!!!!!

This my first attempt to install a bolster and scales to a full tang knife. Picked up blade at the 2000 Game Fair for £35. Picture not too good but I'm pleased with the result. A great liitle knife for unzipping bunnies!

Er, you did in your BB post. ;)

But it's a lovely blade. How does the etching work? Is it surface colouring, indentations or raised sections? If it's flat or not too deep I wouldn't have thought it would get in the way. Cleaning would be more difficult, but shouldn't be insurmountable (although you'd have to take extra care for food prep.)

So, my vote is for a user. But then I've never been a collector of anything, as I don't see the point of having something you can't use!

Just a thought... Although I'm always a sucker for nice, deep, dark exotic wookds, since the etchings look quite primitive, bone/antler scales would probably match really well.

i did say that at BB .. true.. I also said that if it wasn't gone within a week i would make it up how i saw fit.. meaning it may well be mine.

not a fan of antler to be honest, like wood. Am leaning towards amboina, snakewood ( i could call it snakelund!!) or maybe kingwood.. time will tell.
