I expect it's because the axes are mass produced in enough bulk to lower the per unit costs; whereas the pickaroon being more specialized creates less demand and hence lesser numbers produced.
Had a look through the "Huge chest of fastenings" that has boxes of bolts screws and nails. M12 is the biggest I have to hand....big enough do the clever people think?. It will cost nothing to try it, but hate to waste time....
