After some years messing around with slabs of wood and wet&dry I am looking into getting me some waterstones to get the job done a little faster. Knowing very little about stones, however, I quickly found myself lost when it comes to what grids I am after. I found a set with 2 stones 240/800 and 2000/5000. That seems like an awfully big gap between them compared to how I`d do it with wet&dry. Are grits measured differently on stones and paper? And what do I 'need' for getting well used blades up to a polished edge?

Thanks.

ps. Not sure if this is the place for this thread.

I use a 1200/6000 japanese king waterstone.
And occasionally an 800 king waterstone when I get little chips on my edge.
[These are the three which Ray Mears recommends in his book Bushcraft.]
And a piece of veg tan leather glued to a plank of pine as a strop.
