i like the take down axes, got a lovely one from Biker a while ago and i have to say i prefer it over my Mini hatchet, much easier to pack, longer shaft and cuts above it's weight. good gear i reckon

i know mate, 20 dollars off for a plain handle, and in this financial climate, you've got wonder how they afford it!
So works out around £152.00.
I have a Trailhawk that is takedown and love it. Taking the head off is great if you need chisel or plane type tool.
My dislike is the straight shaft as it hampers grip when chopping. If you add a paracord handle that works for the grip but stops the take down ability.

About the same price as a custom knife, axes all ways seem to have a stifled price even though i think there is probably more work involved some times, just wondering why is it you feel its a lot for an axe guys? is it because you view an axe more as a tool than a knife?
Toddy another reason the head comes off is if you use them for throwing and you hit the tree wrong the head just slids down the haft a bit instead of breaking the haft and it makes it easy to replace the haft with a stick when you do have to replace it

I think I'll just stick with my well looked after and neat and tidily shafted axes.

I would happily pay this money for a good axe. I prefer my GB SFA for cutting but would more than happily use the trailhawk especially as it comes apart for transport. I split mine and wrap the head in a cloth and place it well inside my pack and the haft down the back of one of the side pockets. That way it's not readily available for anyone to grab when I'm in a public place.

Not actually being transported on public transport. More when I have parked the car and traveling on foot through car parks or if I need to go do some shopping to stock up if I'm out and about.
Just had a few days at the Moot this year and on one trip to the shops I realized that I still had my knife strapped to my belt, fortunatly I was still in the car at the time.

I would guess they would treat it just the same as a fixed blade, illegal if your with out good reason,
Could even be classed as a concealed weapon. Who knows these days, even more so with the troubles that are on going at the mo.
Thats something i have wondered about, is a concealed weapon classed as being immediately available, like in pocket or belt rather than in the bottom of a pack?
God knows what they think now a days.

i agree entirely that it's about the same price as a custom knife, but it's not custom though, it's factory made on a great big drop hammer using dies to stamp out the shape, custom made axes (such as the one i brought SWMBO from cegga in a recent group by) seem to be considerably cheaper. i wouldn't for one second criticise anyone who wanted to spend that amount of money on a knife, axe, spork, etc. that's their choice, but for me personally £152.00 is a lot for anything that i'm going to hit trees with.
it is an interesting point that people seem much more willing to spend money on knives than on other tools, maybe it's a status thing, maybe it's that knives have quite a bit of "special" attached to them that you don't get with other tools, possibly because we wear our knives quite so prominantly?

Maybe so, do you reckon the knife is view as our version of the sword? do you think there are peeps who would hold the axe in higher regard? personally I think they are roughly equal in importance, I can do just as much with one as the other, of course I cant drop trees to the same diameter with a knife as I can with an axe, but I can whittle as well with my sfa as with a knife( that comment relates to my efforts), I wonder if its down to high value things being small and delicate in look?
