This is my newest cutting tool. It was great for chopping firewood over the weekend while camping. The head didn't come loose. I also used it to pound plastic tent stakes into the ground. It does have some slight scratches now. It was designed to be used for self extraction from downed aircraft and as a SERE tool.

6150 carbon steel

Rockwell rating of 57

Weight: 1.5lbs. Length: 19"

"The head didn't come loose."

I have to say, that usually axe heads don't :)

On this side of the pond some brands of tomahawk heads come loose. Unlike an axe, most tomahaws have the head held on without a metal wedge.

Yes and they're fitted from the top rather than the bottom so that cetrifugal force pushes the hawk harder onto the handle.

Surely then, forgive me being female and of a rather logical mind, one has to wonder about the reliability of such an item in sere ?

If it's threaded onto it's shaft from the top down, then what stops it from fleeing loose when partially wedged in something like a log, a door, or an aeroplane as per the OP ? No point pretending such an action doesn't happen to an axe, because it does. Even if it's just for a moment until you twist your wrist and the axe comes free, or the log splits. I can only surmise that it might be more likely in an emergency situation when folks are a bit panicy.
Besides, if this one didn't and that was noted as a comment by the OP, does this mean that others aren't usually reliable ?

How does centrifical force ram it harder onto the shaft ?

Pretty looking tool though.

cheers,
Toddy

your house!
think of the handle as a wedge, the head slides on from the thin end to the thick, your holding the thin end, so as you swing, it is held by the thicker part above it, Very nice looking tool dude!

But that's the opposite from what Santaman2000 said

I think he meant fitted from the top of axe, not the top of the shaft ? Yes ?
That way the shaft has to act as the wedge, no ?

And, if it's commentable upon that the head didn't come off, surely there's an issue there that might be better addressed before one really needs the axe in sere ?

cheers,
Toddy

Thanks Southey. Perfect description.

Toddy, that's what makes them so useful in a primitive environment. You can quickly and easily take the head off by just holding the hawk upright and striking the handle end (the end away from the head) down onto a solid object. Now you can use the head as a primitive knife then replace it on the handle and turn it upside down and strike the top end of the handle onto a solid object to tighten it. Eureka! the hawk is an axe again.

LOL. They don't come "off." They can come "loose" and slide down toward your hand.

I don't get this wanting the head to come off as a good thing :dunno:
Why not just choke up on the axe if you need it ?

I could see it if the haft was likely to be carp wood and you would most likely need to make a new one, but otherwise ?

Different folks, different strokes I suppose.

Read your post from the viewpoint of someone who isn't familiar with this kind of axe SM2K :)

cheers,
Toddy

In the woods if possible.
It's like some of the entrenching tools. Well the way it goes together is. Or a pick-axe. I like them, they're easier to pack away although I nearly got arrested at Alexandria airport for carrying mine through the metal detector. The entrenching tool, not the pick-axe. :)

Ah, now that makes sense :D

I have seen a pickaxe helve split though; scary when it wedged in rocks and the fellow wielding it went over the top of the spike when the helve split free :yikes: The neolithic wall wasn't for coming down :)

I don't get that part either Toddy. I have seen video of people doing it and then using the head to field dress deer though. Looks easier than with a 19 inch handle attached but I still don't really understand it either.

Below is from the website of the maker.

This is the heavy multiple-use military crash-survival upgrade of the Warhawk. Named the "Warbeast" by those who got the original custom hawks, and designed after many consultations with folks who live and work in bad environments and fly things that get shot down in places they don't really want to be.
