get an airsoft gun. they are cheap, safe enough (with correct supervision. eyes and teeth need protection if being shot at) cheap on ammo, and far too fun.
they are powered off battery, gas or the good old one-shot spring that needs recocking every time. prices go from ten quid for a rubbish springer. i would lash out on an electric or sniper rifle though.

dunno bout british law. would guess its same as here and you dont need a licence once it is under a 100meters per second velocity. make sure to be aware of law of your area regards any gunnish things, cos people can get pretty intense about such subjects.

also look into maybe archery? bit more dangerous, but great fun.

imo dont get airsoft. unless you spend big money (over £100) it will break and will be wildly inaccurate and requires next to no skill to shoot. ask yourself, do you realy want to spend money something that will inevitably break and only fire plastic 10 and barely go through a paper target?

i recomend you get a good quality second hand spring powered air pistol, no expensive CO2 gas to run it on etc. just pellets. probably the best make is webley but only their older guns. i have a webley premier and it is very solid, all machined steel, in fact the only synthetic parts are the scales on the grip and the seals. it is reasonably accurate and medium power (plenty for plinking tin cans and targets at 10m) and it will last you a lifetime. now they are made in turkey aposed to birmingham and the quality is terable:eek: an other good pistol is the BSA scorpion, good accuracy and power but probably a bit of a handfull for a kid.
