Usually strop with Autosol but remembered I have some valve grinding paste...a good alternative? There is obviously two different grits.

Valve grinding paste comes in a few grit.

30/60 (Extra coarse)
80 (Coarse) for maintenance of gang mowers and rough sharpening of low cutters.
120 (Medium) for fine finishing of large mowers and maintenance of low cutters
180 (Standard) for fine finishing of low cutters
220 (Fine) for ultra fine finishing of ornamentl cutters

220 grit will still leave a rough surface compared to polishing paste.

One must remember that valve grinding paste ain't meant to give a mirror polish, it's just supposed to match the grind on the valve to that of the cylinder head enough to give an airtight seal. Which it obviously does, so the surface is left relatively smooth, even if not display-piece smooth. If you ARE looking for a mirror polish, choose something else, but if you just need to strop a frequently used blade, it works a treat...

Silkstone, Blighty!
Dremel do a red polishing compound that you can rub onto a strop, it works brilliantly and is easy to get a hold of and cheap. It's what I use and it works good for polishng plastic watch faces aswell, just rub the watch face up and down the strop a few doze times and it will look as good as new!
