Hi dave, Looks to be a very impressive, Dryads saddle.

Good find, never seen one that big.

My first thought was dryads saddle, but Westnorfolk said it was smooth. That was the undeside like? Was it a polypore or did it have gills? I've come across something similar that had dark brown gills that I couldn't find in any of my books.

thanks for the replies, the underside is darkbrown but no gills. another thing that i thought odd was i took this picture in july and i went back yesterday and its a bit bigger but nothing has eaten it. no nibbls or pecks at all. i gave it a sniff and it just smelt of damp wood. it does feel harder now though.

I think it is a dryads saddle for sure.

As for snuffkins fungi , lentinus tigrinus or neolentinus lepideus have caps that can be patterned like a dryads saddle but have white gills. Panellus spp can have brown gills but are small and dont have patterned caps.
