undershorts options

Picked up a pair of woolpower full leg underwear last year and have worn them once, far too hot and I didn't particularly like the restrictive movement. So I'm wondering what people might recommend - I'd really like under shorts in a similar length to cycling shorts, pref in wool but without the usual padding cycling shorts have but I'm open to other ideas.
