Can someone give me a quick 101 on topboxes for cars?

I know that there are different sizes, but are there different modes of attachment? - in fact how do they attach?

And what do I need to know and/or think about before getting one.

Wilcomotor save generally have the cheapest. They clamp to bars which then attach to the car. So you need a roof rack (or bars) as well.

OP,
Just go to Halfords, not saying you should buy anything from them but they will tell you about attachment points and whatever else you might need to make your car accept a roof box.

Do you have rails, gutters, or brackets? Either way I'd recommend lockable bars to span them.

Also there's an easy inflatable option which is pretty cool. It works with a roof bag. This is handy as it stores much smaller.

Top tip - always put an extra strap around the box, don't rely on the built in locking system. I had mine fly open on the M4 one day, fortunately not much flew out and the lid actually stayed attached, very nice gents from the Highways Agency recovered the couple of bits that did come out and provided some rope to get me home. Pants filled and lesson learnt
